TV Special
Description
Fūko Izumo is the central protagonist of her story, an eighteen-year-old Japanese girl whose life has been shaped by a tragic and isolating power. She is a Negator, a person who possesses an ability that denies a specific rule of the world; in her case, she is the bearer of Unluck. This power negates the luck of anyone she touches with her bare skin, causing random and often catastrophic misfortunes to befall them. The intensity of the disaster is directly proportional to three factors: the duration of the skin contact, the surface area of the contact, and most critically, the level of genuine affection Fūko feels for the person at that moment. Because of this, a simple kiss on the cheek is enough to cause broken bones, while a loving, prolonged hug could trigger a city-wide calamity like a meteor shower or a devastating earthquake.
Fūko’s background is defined by the trauma caused by her own ability. At the age of eight, her Unluck manifested for the first time as she said goodbye to her parents at an airport. The disaster this caused resulted in a plane crash that killed both of them, along with 270 other passengers. Following this tragedy, she went to live with her grandfather, but her power continued to bring him and others misfortune, leading to her becoming a terrified and reclusive shut-in. She found her only solace in a serialized romance manga that she cherished. The story begins on the day the final volume of this manga is released; feeling she has no future and can no longer bear her loneliness, Fūko resolves to end her own life.
Her suicide attempt is interrupted by Andy, an immortal Negator who cannot die. Rather than being repulsed by her power, he is fascinated by it as a potential means to finally achieve his own death. This encounter forces Fūko out of her isolation and into the dangerous world of the Union, an organization of Negators who battle supernatural beings called UMAs to prevent the end of the world. Her initial personality is meek, depressive, and full of self-loathing, but she is also deeply kind-hearted and possesses a fierce, unyielding determination that is only revealed under pressure. Over time, her motivation shifts from merely surviving or helping Andy die to a powerful desire to protect the people she cares about and to change the world itself.
As she gains confidence, Fūko’s role in the story evolves dramatically. She starts as a protected asset, with Andy using his own body as a shield to deploy her power offensively. However, as the narrative progresses into the Winter Hen arc and beyond, she grows into a formidable strategist and Action Girl. Her understanding of her own ability deepens, allowing her to use it in more complex ways. For example, she learns to use her long hair as a conduit for Unluck, creating an Unluck Whip to strike enemies from a distance without direct hand-to-hand contact. Eventually, after a cataclysmic event known as Ragnarok, Fūko accepts the immense responsibility of becoming the new leader of the Union, taking the First Seat at the Round Table, formerly held by her mentor, Juiz.
A key aspect of her development is her relationship with Andy. What begins as a transactional partnership born of necessity slowly blossoms into a deep, mutual romantic love. For Fūko, this love is a double-edged sword. While it gives her immense emotional strength, it also supercharges her Unluck ability, making her capable of unleashing world-ending levels of misfortune on anyone she might touch with genuine affection, including Andy himself. This creates a poignant tension, as her strongest weapon is inextricably linked to her deepest emotions. Beyond Andy, Fūko forges crucial relationships with other Union members, such as her close friendship with the shy and powerful Tatiana and her martial arts training under the skilled Negator Shen.
In the later narrative, following a reset of the world into a new loop, Fūko demonstrates her greatest growth. Having lived for over a hundred years while remaining physically young, she becomes a highly competent, confident, and even eccentric leader. She uses her centuries of experience and meticulous planning to seek out and save other Negators from their own tragic fates before they even manifest. Fūko’s notable abilities expand far beyond her core power during this time. She becomes a master of the Shin Hakkyoku martial arts style, making her a formidable hand-to-hand combatant capable of defeating masters like Feng Kowloon in a fair fight. She also develops a technique called Bad Bullet, where she imbues small, cherished objects like custom-made bullets with her Unluck. She then fires these bullets from a revolver, which allows her to trigger a stroke of Unluck at range without needing to touch her target directly. This combination of long-range misfortune, strategic genius, and physical prowess completes her transformation from a helpless victim of her power into a proactive heroine who fights to create a world where humanity can control its own destiny.
