Description
In the world of Petals of Reincarnation, Hans U. Rudel appears as a memorable and formidable antagonist, serving as one of the five elite generals within the Sinners Organization. His character is a reincarnation of the historical Hans-Ulrich Rudel, the famed German military pilot of World War II credited with an extraordinary record of destroying over five hundred tanks, one battleship, and numerous other military assets. Despite being hailed as a hero by the German military, the real-life Rudel's postwar actions, which included helping Nazi war criminals escape justice, led to his reincarnation as a Sinner rather than a member of the opposing Forest of the Greats.

Visually, Rudel's appearance is striking and unnerving. He wears a military uniform reminiscent of the Nazi era, complemented by a long white scarf emblazoned with the Pupula Duplex symbol, marking his allegiance to the Sinners' leader, Kouu. His most distinctive features are his face, which is composed of two gaping holes that serve as his eyes and a wide, unsettling smile with a small opening that functions as his mouth. This bizarre visage is often accompanied by a massive bazooka-like weapon tied to his scarf.

Rudel's personality can best be described as that of a "blood knight". He is a warrior who is perpetually bored and driven by an insatiable need to find purpose through combat. In battle, he is taunting and aggressive, mocking opponents for being "stupid" or "too slow". However, this ruthless exterior hides a surprising level of honor and discipline. Despite his love for senseless violence, Rudel faithfully follows orders, which includes a command from Kouu to ensure the safety of the protagonist, Touya Senji. More notably, he possesses a warrior's respect for a worthy opponent, specifically Hiroshi Funasaka. Rudel desires nothing more than a fair, one-on-one fight to the death with Funasaka, as both share the ability of immortality. In his final moments, he accepts death gracefully and even offers crucial advice to his enemy, Touya, revealing a capacity for cordiality and a desire to help him overcome future challenges.

In the story, Rudel is introduced as a significant hurdle during Touya and Funasaka's investigation of the Earth Branch Fortress, where he springs an explosive trap on them. His primary role is to act as a direct counterpart and antagonist to Hiroshi Funasaka, setting the stage for a clash between two warriors who can no longer die. He serves the Sinners as a powerful enforcer, but his personal motivation is less about ideology and more about alleviating his existential boredom through battle.

The most pivotal relationship in Rudel's arc is with Hiroshi Funasaka. Their conflict is unique, as both possess immortality—Funasaka with his regenerative "immortal" body and Rudel with his "invariant" body that nullifies external attacks. This creates a battle that transcends typical physical combat, becoming a test of endurance and will, as neither can be permanently harmed until their stamina is depleted. Through this drawn-out fight, Funasaka confronts his own numbness and lack of purpose, leading to a moment of mutual understanding between the two warriors. Rudel also acts as a guide of sorts for Touya, first by withholding attacks on the boy and finally by warning him of the dangers ahead in Kouu's castle before his death.

Regarding his abilities, as a "Perfect Returner," Rudel is always in his transformed state. His specific talent is called Phoenix, which grants him invulnerability. This power counteracts any external influence with an equivalent reaction force, effectively making him immortal for as long as his stamina holds out. As a reincarnation of a famed dive-bomber pilot, his combat style revolves around heavy firepower. He can summon a heavy fighter machine gun and multiple 250kg bombs, which he unleashes in a devastating attack known as Jericho's Trumpet, named after the sirens on the Stuka dive bombers. Despite his minor role as an antagonist, Hans U. Rudel leaves a significant impact, remembered for his ferocious personality, his unique code of honor, and his role in one of the series' most significant battles.
