Description
Kaede Azusagawa is the younger sister of the protagonist, Sakuta Azusagawa. During her time in middle school, she was the victim of severe online bullying, including receiving death threats from her classmates. This trauma triggered a case of Adolescence Syndrome, a phenomenon where emotional and psychological distress manifests as physical or supernatural events. As a result, Kaede developed physical cuts and bruises on her body and suffered from dissociative amnesia, which caused her to lose all of her previous memories and develop an entirely new personality. The psychological strain was so significant that her parents struggled to cope, leaving Kaede in the care of her brother, Sakuta.

The character of Kaede exists in two distinct states. The original personality, whose given name is written with the kanji for "flower maple" (花楓), is described as having a kind but cheeky and socially confident nature. After the bullying, this personality was suppressed, and a new, fragile identity emerged. This new personality adopted the phonetic spelling of her name, Kaede (かえで), and became a shut-in, unable to leave the apartment she shared with her brother. This version of Kaede is cheerful and affectionate at home, often wearing a panda-themed onesie and referring to herself in the third person. She is deeply attached to her brother, who was the first person to recognize her new personality as a distinct identity, a concept she accepted with tearful approval. However, this personality is extremely fearful of strangers and the outside world, panicking at the thought of interacting with people like Mai Sakurajima. She also develops a strong phobia of smartphones and the internet due to their association with the bullying.

Kaede’s central motivation is to overcome her condition and become someone who can function in society, largely driven by her desire to be a source of happiness for her brother. To achieve this, she writes a list of goals to accomplish with Sakuta, which includes simple tasks like going outside, using public transportation, and eventually attending school. Her role in the story is primarily that of a cherished family member whose well-being is a constant concern for Sakuta. Her struggle with Adolescence Syndrome is one of the earliest and most personal examples of the phenomenon in the series, directly affecting the protagonist and shaping his own sympathetic scarring.

Kaede's key relationship is with her brother, Sakuta. She views him as her sole protector and understanding companion, and she works diligently to create happy memories for him, knowing that her time as the current "Kaede" may be limited. Over time, she forms bonds with other characters as well. She grows close to Mai Sakurajima, whom she sees as a role model and a kind of sister figure. She also develops a relationship with Nodoka Toyohama, and through her, becomes a fan of her idol group. Her childhood friend, Kotomi Kano, remains an important connection, though the post-amnesia Kaede does not initially recognize her.

Kaede's narrative arc is one of profound change. After two years of living as the gentle, panda-loving shut-in, she successfully completes her list of goals with Sakuta’s help, achieving milestones like visiting the school at night. However, the completion of these goals triggers the return of her original memories and personality. She wakes up one morning as the original "Kaede-san," who has no memory of the previous two years spent as the alternate Kaede. This original personality, now simply called Kaede, is quieter and more reserved than her cheerful predecessor. She must then cope with the loss of two years of her life and the complex feeling of being compared to the version of herself that everyone else had grown to love. In subsequent developments, she works to fulfill the wishes of her alternate personality, such as aiming to attend Sakuta's high school. She eventually enrolls in a correspondence high school and begins to build a new life, even overcoming her trauma to start using a smartphone and working part-time at the same family restaurant as her brother.

While the post-amnesia Kaede has no special abilities, her Adolescence Syndrome is notable for its manifestation of physical wounds, such as cuts and bruises appearing on her body as a direct psychosomatic response to stress and fear. These symptoms flare up when she is under emotional pressure, such as when attempting to leave her home or when confronting difficult memories.
