Description
Kafka Hibino is the central protagonist, a man whose life takes an extraordinary turn after a strange event grants him monstrous power. At 32 years old and standing 181 centimeters tall, he is an older recruit compared to the typical cadet in the Defense Force. He has a tall, muscular frame, though with a slightly soft midsection, dark spiky hair, and usually wears a jovial expression on his face.

Before becoming a soldier, Kafka worked for Monster Sweeper Inc., a professional kaiju cleaning company responsible for the dangerous and gruesome task of disposing of giant monster corpses. His background in this field gave him a deep, practical knowledge of kaiju anatomy, which later proved to be a unique asset. His past is defined by a shared childhood promise with his friend, Mina Ashiro, to join the Defense Force and fight kaiju together. While Mina rose through the ranks to become the captain of the Third Division, Kafka repeatedly failed the entrance exams and eventually abandoned the dream, resigning himself to a blue-collar life.

Kafka has a comically childish and friendly personality, which often makes him an easy target for teasing, especially about his age. He frequently gets annoyed when younger colleagues call him an old man. Despite this easygoing exterior, he is a genuinely caring and kind individual with a strong sense of responsibility. He goes out of his way to help others, even before he gains any powers, and possesses a determined and serious side that emerges in critical situations.

His primary motivation is to stand by Mina Ashiro's side as an equal, fulfilling the vow they made as children. This goal is reignited when he meets Reno Ichikawa, a younger colleague at the cleanup company who inspires him to take the Defense Force exam one last time. He is driven by a deep-seated desire to not disappoint those who believe in him, though this also leads to insecurity when his monstrous nature puts those connections at risk.

After deciding to reattempt the exam, a mysterious small kaiju enters his body, transforming him into a humanoid identified kaiju designated as Kaiju No. 8. He retains his human consciousness and can shift between forms, but he must keep his identity a secret, as the Defense Force hunts all kaiju. He joins the Third Division as a cadet, where his poor compatibility with powered combat suits (initially 0%, later rising to just 1%) is offset by his immense kaiju abilities.

His relationships anchor his journey. Reno Ichikawa is his first and most trusted ally, knowing his secret from the beginning. Mina Ashiro represents his ultimate goal, though she is initially unaware of his dual identity. Kikoru Shinomiya, a prodigious cadet, discovers his secret early on but chooses to protect it after he saves her life. His commanding officers, Vice-Captain Soshiro Hoshina and Director General Isao Shinomiya, play crucial roles in his development, with Hoshina recognizing his potential and Isao testing his control.

Throughout the story, Kafka struggles with the fear of losing control to his kaiju side. When he first transforms, the horror of becoming the thing he has always hated causes him severe distress. Later, he fears that the kaiju within him could hurt the people he cares about. His character development involves learning to trust his comrades and accept his dual nature, ultimately realizing his powers can be used for protection.

In his kaiju form, known as Kaiju No. 8, his appearance is coal-black with glowing cyan energy lines and a demonic skeletal face. He possesses a fortitude level of 9.8, making him exceptionally powerful. His notable abilities include immense superhuman strength capable of destroying a powerful kaiju with a single punch, incredible durability and pain resistance, enhanced speed and reflexes, and a unique kaiju detection sense. He can also perform partial transformations, manifesting only a limb to access his power without fully changing.
