Description
Hyō is a prominent supporting character in the action manga series Sakamoto Days. He is introduced as a powerful assassin belonging to the Order, the elite top-secret unit of the Japanese Association of Assassins (JAA), serving alongside formidable colleagues such as Shishiba and Osaragi. A senior alumnus of the JCC assassin training center, he is an older contemporary of series protagonist Taro Sakamoto and fellow Order member Yoichi Nagumo.

Physically, Hyō is an imposing and towering man, standing at 203 centimeters tall with a large, muscular, and robust frame. He has messy, spiky dark hair and sunken eyes, and his most distinctive facial feature is a metallic piece implanted into his jaw. His appearance is further accentuated by a multitude of ear piercings, a hoop piercing by his left eyelid, two chain necklaces, and numerous black rings on his fingers, often accompanied by golden yellow knuckledusters which serve as his preferred weapon.

Despite his intimidating and brutal exterior, Hyō's personality is defined by a significant contrast between his professional ruthlessness and an inherent, somewhat clumsy kindness. As an assassin, he carries out his missions without mercy or compassion, adhering strictly to the rules and guidelines of the Order. He speaks in a rough and often brusque manner, and is quick to anger, frequently threatening his colleague Nagumo for his teasing and annoying antics. However, this hard shell conceals a gentle and soft-hearted interior. He is a polite man who demonstrates concern for regular civilians, once yelling at Osaragi to drive carefully with an elderly passenger in the car and apologizing to a doctor for the disturbance caused by a destructive fight in a hospital. He has been shown performing small, considerate gestures, such as straightening a fallen vase or offering help to a stranger he has just met. This duality leads Kumanomi, one of his primary opponents, to remark that he is incompatible with being an assassin, a sentiment Hyō himself seems to agree with. Taro Sakamoto himself has described Hyō as a kind-hearted man.

Hyō's motivations are rooted in a deep sense of duty and a personal drive to overcome his perceived shortcomings. He is an unwaveringly loyal member of the Order, committed to his position at the pinnacle of the assassin world. This commitment is shown when he initially refuses to divulge information about the JAA to Sakamoto, only relenting upon realizing it was to protect a family. In his youth, Hyō was considered by his mentor, Satoru Yotsumura, to be an assassin with the least amount of talent. Rather than being discouraged, this critique fueled an immense sense of dedication in him, driving him to work tirelessly until he gained recognition as one of the strongest. Because of these less-than-stellar beginnings, he holds himself to high standards and refers to his fellow Order members as genius monsters, striving to remain at their level. By his own admission, he feels he could never become a true assassin because he lacks the pure, unfeeling qualities of others, often concerning himself with things he should not, like the safety of innocent people.

His role in the story brings him into significant conflict and alliance with other characters. His relationship with Nagumo is characterized by years of open hostility and distrust, though Nagumo becomes visibly angry upon learning of Hyō's death, firing a barrage of bullets into the sky in his honor, stating that the ones who die fastest are not the untalented, but those who are kind. One of Hyō's most pivotal relationships is with the young sniper Heisuke Mashimo. Upon their first meeting at an airport, Hyō helps Heisuke find his missing luggage, and Heisuke quickly considers him a friend. Hyō is impressed by Heisuke's sniping ability and states that he likes him, seeing his past self in the younger man's dedication. This bond defines Hyō's final arc, as he goes to great lengths to protect Heisuke during a fierce battle.

During this battle against the deadly assassin Kumanomi, who wields electromagnetic powers, Hyō demonstrates his peak abilities and makes the ultimate sacrifice. As a member of the Order, he is one of the strongest assassins in the world, favoring unarmed close-quarters combat with his knuckledusters. His combat style relies on his incredible physical strength, capable of punching a person clean through a wall, destroying a steel sheet with a single blow, and pulverizing a wooden pier. His endurance and durability are legendary; he withstands a barrage of high-speed metal projectiles from an MRI machine, a direct punch from the superhumanly strong Kumanomi, and even having his right ear ripped off, all without flinching. He possesses what has been called the Order's finest steel body. Even after sustaining catastrophic and fatal injuries, including being shot with a coil gun and impaled by multiple boat propellers, Hyō's tenacity allows him to momentarily overpower his opponent. His final act is a conscious choice to prioritize protection over his own life, purposely getting in the way of Kumanomi's attacks to shield civilians and Heisuke from harm. In his dying moments, even as he drowns, his grip is so strong that Kumanomi is forced to sever her own arm to escape, a final testament to his immense physical power and unyielding will.
