Description
Couran Salamakhia is a character from the anime As a Reincarnated Aristocrat, I'll Use My Appraisal Skill. He is the eldest son of the late governor of the Missian Province and finds himself at the center of a succession crisis following his father's death. As the elder brother, Couran is a primary claimant to the title of governor, a position contested by his younger sibling, Vasmarque Salamakhia. This familial dispute quickly escalates into a full-scale civil war that divides the province and becomes a pivotal event in the story.

Couran is depicted as the ruler of the prosperous trade city of Semplar, a position that grants him significant economic and strategic resources. His personality is consistently portrayed as noble, just, and remarkably humble for a man of his standing. He is known to listen to his subjects and values their input, a quality that distinguishes him from many other aristocrats. This open-mindedness is particularly evident in his relationship with the protagonist, Ars Louvent. Couran recognizes and publicly acknowledges Ars's talents, notably his ability to foresee conflicts and understand people, and he defends Ars against skeptical nobles. While Couran initially places great trust in Ars, his confidence is later tempered by a degree of suspicion, as he begins to question the young lord’s true intentions and the mysterious origin of his unique abilities.

His primary motivation is not merely to win the civil war but to realize a grand, ambitious vision. Couran aspires to unite the Missian Province and declare it an independent nation, to be known as the Kingdom of Missian. This desire to become a founding king drives his actions and his willingness to command a massive army, which at one point numbers 150,000 soldiers, in his campaign against his brother’s forces. He convenes war councils and strategic meetings in Semplar to plan his military maneuvers, which include laying siege to key fortifications like Staatz Castle.

Throughout the story, Couran serves as a powerful and influential lord whose conflict forms the main backdrop for the protagonist's rise. He invites Ars to participate in his war councils and gives him crucial responsibilities, effectively making him a key asset in his campaign. His key relationship is, of course, with his antagonist brother, Vasmarque, who controls the provincial capital of Arcantez and commands his own formidable army of 180,000 soldiers. Within his own faction, Couran relies on a circle of retainers and must manage the politics of his diverse coalition of nobles.

Over the course of the civil war, Couran demonstrates his capabilities as a military leader, ultimately achieving a significant victory by storming Staatz Castle. Following this success, he grants his troops time to rest in the city, showing a concern for their well-being. However, his development is also marked by a growing political complexity, as his initial unguarded trust in Ars gives way to a more cautious assessment of the young noble's growing power and mysterious capabilities. As a talented commander and a central figure in the struggle for Missian, Couran stands as a formidable leader whose ambitions shape the destiny of his province.
