Description
Follo is a young man who serves as a member of the support group for the organization known as the Janitors. His most defining characteristic is his deep, persistent ambition to become a Giver, an individual who can utilize the power of Anima from a treasured item called a Jinki. Because he has not yet awakened this ability, he works in a support capacity, providing physical manpower for the Givers during their missions to clean the world of dangerous Aberrant Beasts.
In terms of appearance, Follo wears the standard uniform of the support corps, but is easily recognized by the signature goggles he wears perched on top of his hat. His hairstyle features a single bang that falls between his eyes and the beginnings of a mullet at the back. His primary tool for combat is a hammer, which he wields with remarkable physical strength, and this same hammer is the item he is cultivating in the hopes that it will become his Jinki.
Follo's personality is shaped by the tension between his strong sense of justice and his deep-seated insecurities. He joined the Janitors with the noble goal of wiping out beasts, but he can easily become timid due to his lack of a Jinki. Despite these fears, he perseveres and takes great pride in his work, vowing to continue his duties as a supporter even if his dream of becoming a Giver is realized. He is prone to mistakes in the field, having once tripped on a rock and been backed into a corner by a beast, only to be saved by the protagonist, Rudo. This event left him in shock but also fostered a deep sense of gratitude and a connection to his savior.
Follo's role in the story evolves from a background supporter to a more central character as he becomes a part of Rudo's extended circle. He is initially present during cleanup missions and evacuation efforts, but his involvement deepens during a mission to a merchant's location where the group is trapped by Vandals. During this mission, a pivotal moment occurs when he and his senior, Griss Lubion, face a powerful enemy. While Griss is stabbed and gravely wounded, Follo is forced to tend to his injuries, barely keeping him alive in a desperate situation that leaves him sobbing over Griss's hospital bed.
His key relationships are instrumental to his character. He places great faith and trust in Griss, who acts as a mentor and caretaker, with Follo opening up to him about his personal reasons for joining the Janitors. He also holds great respect for the Giver Riyou, trusting her abilities completely during combat. Perhaps his most complex relationship is with Rudo. While grateful to Rudo for saving his life, Follo also struggles with feelings of jealousy and tension towards him. Having been a supporter longer than Rudo has been a Janitor, Follo finds it difficult to accept that Rudo, a natural-born Giver, is given important missions and exhibits immense strength that seems to come without the years of effort Follo himself has put in. This tension leads to misunderstandings and conflict, though their bond is also marked by genuine moments of friendship, such as when Follo gives Rudo a new uniform.
Follo's character undergoes a significant development as he finally achieves his goal. After years of trying to awaken his powers, he is able to break through his mental block and becomes a Giver. His hammer becomes his Vital Instrument, and the circumstances of his awakening are notable; it occurs shortly after he wore a piece of the Watchman Series, a set of ancient and powerful Jinki that may have the hidden ability to turn people into Givers through contact. His awakening surprises even the leader of the Janitors, suggesting that there is more to Follo's newfound power than mere coincidence.
As for his notable abilities, prior to awakening, Follo's primary contribution was his physical strength. He demonstrated the ability to launch Aberrant Beasts into the air, making him a formidable fighter even without a Jinki. He was also resourceful, using his hammer for combat and supporting his teammates by evacuating civilians or holding back a distraught Rudo from rushing into danger. After becoming a Giver, his hammer becomes his official Jinki, granting him enhanced abilities that have yet to be fully explored but represent the culmination of his long-held dream.
