Description
Nahoya Kawata, better known as Smiley, is the Fourth Division Captain of the Tokyo Manji Gang. He is the older twin brother of Souya Kawata, who goes by the nickname Angry. Smiley is of short stature and small build, with fair skin, voluminous curly peach‑colored hair, and a wide, constant grin that usually masks his eyes. He wears two silver double piercings on his left ear. His perpetual smile is the source of his nickname and also serves as a psychological tool, making him unpredictable and intimidating in combat.
Not much is known about his early life. Before joining Tokyo Manji, Smiley and his brother were the leaders of a small gang called the Twin Devils, which operated in the Meguro area and occasionally clashed with Kanji Mochizuki’s Jugem gang. The Twin Devils eventually disbanded, and both brothers joined the Tokyo Manji Gang, where Nahoya was appointed captain of the Fourth Division and Souya became vice‑captain.
Smiley’s personality is defined by his love of fighting and his fierce loyalty to his twin brother. He genuinely enjoys combat and actively seeks out strong opponents, often appearing excited and cheerful during brawls. Despite his constant grin, he is difficult to read; the smile never wavers, even in serious or dangerous situations. This trait has earned him the reputation of being a “demon behind the smile”—someone who can be cold‑blooded in a fight despite his seemingly friendly demeanor. His strongest loyalty is to Souya; he has vowed never to let his brother cry and is willing to go to any lengths to protect him, even if that means opposing the gang. At the same time, he respects the Tokyo Manji Gang and its founder, Manjiro Sano (Mikey), and is dedicated to his division and comrades.
In the War of the Three Titans Arc, Smiley continues to serve as a core fighter for Tokyo Manji. He participates in the major conflicts that define this final arc, fighting alongside his brother and the rest of Toman. His role is that of a reliable, experienced soldier—a veteran whose combat skills and unreadable demeanor make him a dangerous opponent. While he does not drive the main plot, his presence reinforces the strength and unity of the gang.
Smiley’s most important relationship is with his twin, Souya. The two are inseparable; they often coordinate their outfits (with Smiley choosing the opposite color of his brother’s), and their bond is the foundation of Smiley’s motivations. He is protective and caring, and his decisions are frequently influenced by what is best for Souya. He also shares camaraderie with other Toman members, particularly the senior executives, and is respected for his leadership of the Fourth Division.
Throughout the series, Smiley shows limited character development compared to the main cast, but his loyalty and protective nature remain consistent. His experience as a former gang leader gives him useful tactical instincts, and his fighting style is aggressive, agile, and unconventional. He relies on hand‑to‑hand combat and has proven himself in numerous gang wars, from the Moebius and Valhalla arcs through to the Tenjiku conflict and into the War of the Three Titans. His physical strength is notable for his lean build, and his mental fortitude—expressed through his unwavering smile—makes him a formidable presence on the battlefield.
