Description
Kaiju No. 9 is the primary antagonist of the story, recognized as the first kaiju discovered to possess linguistic abilities and a high degree of intelligence. The character is a tall, beige, humanoid kaiju with a naturally unsettling appearance. Its head is notable for two hammerhead shark-like protrusions and a mouth filled with jagged, lipless teeth, while its body maintains a long, slender, and skeletal frame. Through its ability to shapeshift, it can alter its form to disguise itself as specific humans, a tactic it uses extensively for infiltration. After undergoing a molting process, it gains a more muscular build with darker gray skin, crimson highlights on its joints and horns, and glowing red eyes. Later, after absorbing the power of another creature, it becomes significantly larger, developing a long tail and additional eyes.
In terms of personality, this kaiju is cold, calm, and highly observant, meticulously calculating its moves and showing little emotion unless frustrated or defeated. It is ruthless in pursuit of its objective, which is the destruction of the Defense Force and the reclamation of a significant kaiju power. Despite its monstrous nature, it possesses a level of admiration for human tenacity and a desire to understand humanity. It is prone to underestimating humans, a weakness that persists despite repeated evidence of their resilience and ability to thwart its plans. The character is driven by a personal vendetta against its main rival, and it holds grudges against anyone who interferes with its schemes.
The entity plays a central role as the master strategist driving the conflict. It first appears during the Defense Force aptitude test, where it incapacitates an officer and resurrects a defeated kaiju before escaping. Later, during an operation in Sagamihara, it is uncovered while disguised as a human worker, revealing its true form and its ability to control kaiju corpses. After escaping that encounter, it hides in a city apartment to molt and grow stronger. Its major attack occurs in Shinagawa, where it splits itself into multiple bodies to confuse and attack the Defense Force on multiple fronts. The climax of its initial plan involves a diversionary tactic; while its copies engage the Defense Force, the real body infiltrates the headquarters to confront the Director General. Its goal is to absorb the power of a specific numbered kaiju, a fight it wins, allowing it to fuse with that power and become significantly more powerful.
The character has key relationships with several members of the Defense Force. It views the protagonist as its primary target, driven to kill him to steal his kaiju power. Their rivalry is intense, with the kaiju swearing to destroy him after their first major fight. It encounters other officers during the Sagamihara operation, mocking their desperate attempts to fight back and preparing to kill them before being stopped. It also has a direct and tragic confrontation with the Director General, whom it seeks out specifically to kill and absorb for his power. To psychologically torment the Director General's daughter, the kaiju later morphs its face to resemble her father's.
Throughout the narrative, this character demonstrates significant development in power and strategy. It begins as a mysterious infiltrator but evolves through several distinct forms. It undergoes a molting process that enhances its physical strength, later fuses with a powerful kaiju to grow in size and ability, and eventually integrates traits from multiple other numbered kaiju into a composite form. It learns from each battle, becoming stronger after every fight and adapting its tactics to counter the Defense Force’s strategies.
The character possesses a wide array of notable abilities. One of its most dangerous skills is the power to absorb the knowledge and memories of anyone it consumes, allowing it to gather intelligence and mimic human behavior perfectly. It has incredible regenerative capabilities, able to regrow its head and reform its body as long as its core remains intact. It can also create multiple copies of itself that share information and can engage separate opponents simultaneously. Offensively, it can fire powerful energy projectiles from its fingers that break the sound barrier and can even revive and control dead kaiju corpses, turning them into obedient soldiers. It can also create a localized field that disrupts communication signals, isolating its targets from reinforcements.
