Description
Leonof the Puppet-Master is an elderly man and a member of the Gung-Ho Guns, the group of assassins serving Legato Bluesummers in the series Trigun Stargaze. He is characterized by his ability to control a large number of puppets through an elaborate system of wires connected to small metal spheres. These puppets are crafted with such precision that they are difficult to distinguish from real people, and Leonof can manipulate multiple puppets simultaneously, see through their eyes, and speak through them. In Trigun Stargaze, his puppets are depicted as mechanical dolls rather than being made from human victims, a departure from other iterations of the character.

His role in the story centers on an ambush aboard the Flying Ship, also referred to as Ship 3, where he infiltrates the vessel alongside other Gung-Ho Guns members. He replaces a character named Jessica with one of his puppets in an attempt to assassinate Vash the Stampede. Despite the initial success of the ruse, Vash adapts to Leonof’s puppet-based combat style, using his quick thinking and tactical skill to outmaneuver him. The confrontation escalates when Nicholas D. Wolfwood arrives and destroys Leonof with a missile from the Punisher, ending his threat.

Little is revealed about Leonof’s personal background or motivations in Trigun Stargaze beyond his loyalty to the Gung-Ho Guns and his willingness to use deception and remote-controlled puppets to harm those close to Vash. His personality comes across as cold, calculating, and detached, as he treats his puppets as disposable tools and shows no hesitation in his schemes. He experiences a moment of confusion when a target, Brad, sacrifices himself to protect Vash, remarking that his plan was perfect, which suggests a limited understanding of human selflessness. His development is minimal, as he appears as a one-episode antagonist whose defeat underscores the danger Vash faces from the Gung-Ho Guns. His key relationships include his service under Legato and his brief cooperation with other assassins such as Gray the Ninelives and Hoppered the Gauntlet during the Flying Ship operation. His notable abilities are entirely tied to his puppet mastery: remote control, multi-tasking, sensory sharing with his puppets, and the creation of convincingly human-like decoys.
