Description
Grelle Sutcliff is a Grim Reaper affiliated with the Retrieval Division of the Grim Reaper Dispatch. In the Emerald Witch Arc of the storyline, Grelle travels to Germany alongside a fellow Reaper, William T. Spears. Upon their arrival, they meet with the German Grim Reapers Ludger and Sascha. During this encounter, Ludger notes that Grelle's customary flamboyant greetings remain unchanged. While William handles official documents and expresses displeasure at being sent such a distance, Grelle remarks on genuinely enjoying the trip in William's company, a sentiment that prompts William to strike them with his Death Scythe. Before departing, William instructs Sascha and Ludger to inform the English branch if they receive any information regarding the seceders.
As a Grim Reaper, Grelle's role is to manage the souls of the deceased. However, a notable aspect of Grelle's background is a period of suspension from these duties. This suspension resulted from conspiring with Angelina Dalles, also known as Madame Red, in a series of murders as Jack the Ripper, an act that blatantly violated the Grim Reaper code of neutrality in human affairs.
Grelle possesses a highly distinctive personality, characterized by being outspoken and flamboyant, with a tendency to express desires without reservation. There is a strong fixation on the color red, which Grelle believes can be used to achieve beauty. Combativeness is another defining trait, and Grelle is known to resort to violence quickly to remove obstacles. This inclination has led to numerous confrontations with the demon butler Sebastian Michaelis, about whom Grelle harbors a persistent infatuation, often referring to him with playful nicknames. Grelle has little patience for those held back by their emotions, having lethally turned on former partner Angelina Dalles when she hesitated to kill her nephew.
While Grelle initially rejected the principles of Grim Reapers, a period of suspension led to a greater respect for the importance of maintaining neutrality and properly reaping souls. Despite this, an impulsive nature means Grelle is still prone to transgressing these rules. Speech patterns often incorporate double entendres and theatrical references, such as comparing the relationship with Sebastian to that of Romeo and Juliet. Notably, Grelle's gender identity is complex; while biologically male, Grelle presents with a feminine demeanor, wears feminine-coded clothing, and refers to oneself using feminine pronouns, with a stated desire for gender reassignment.
Physically, Grelle is recognized by long, dark red hair, sharp shark-like teeth, and chartreuse-colored eyes that are a common trait among Grim Reapers. Signature attire includes high-heeled boots and a long red coat, which Grelle took from Angelina Dalles after mortally wounding her and often wears draped over the shoulders with the sleeves rolled up. Grelle also wears red-framed glasses adorned with a chain featuring small skulls.
In terms of abilities, as a Grim Reaper Grelle possesses physical attributes far exceeding those of a normal human, including enhanced stamina, speed, and agility, as well as the ability to heal almost instantaneously from injury. The primary weapon is a Death Scythe, which Grelle has illegally modified to function as a large, powerful chainsaw, considering standard scythes to be out of fashion. When this scythe is used, it reveals a person's Cinematic Record, the memories of their life, as their soul is cut from their body. The Death Scythe is one of the only weapons capable of harming or killing both demons and other Grim Reapers.
