Description
Diedrich is a German nobleman, known as the Baron of Weizsäcker, and serves as a long-time ally and friend to the Phantomhive family. His background is deeply intertwined with the previous generation, as he was a schoolmate of Vincent Phantomhive, Ciel's father, at Weston College in England. During his school years, Diedrich was the prefect of the Green Lion dormitory and had a strong dislike for Vincent, who was the prefect of the Sapphire Owl dormitory, due to his relaxed and seemingly unserious demeanor. This rivalry culminated in a wager on a cricket tournament, which Vincent won. As the loser, Diedrich was forced to become Vincent's "fag," a type of servant or attendant, in a bond that Vincent declared would have no time limit, thus forging their lifelong connection.
Diedrich’s physical appearance has changed drastically over time. In his youth at Weston College and even during Ciel’s early childhood, he was a slender, athletic young man with short black hair. In the present day, however, he is considerably overweight and sports a thick, handlebar mustache. Despite his large frame, he has retained a surprising degree of physical fitness and agility, which often takes others by surprise. He consistently dresses in a traditional German military-style uniform and boots, reflecting his status and nationality.
His personality presents a contrast between a gruff exterior and a fundamentally kind nature. Outwardly, Diedrich is often impatient, rude, and easily exasperated, with a perpetually angry expression. He strictly adheres to rules and has little tolerance for tardiness or irresponsibility. Despite his grouchy demeanor, Vincent Phantomhive himself asserted that Diedrich is actually a very kind and reliable individual who will go out of his way to help those in need. He possesses great integrity, is capable of accepting defeat gracefully, and tends to keep his promises. He is also a voracious eater, with a particular fondness for sandwiches, and he humorously blames the stress caused by Ciel for his significant weight gain.
Throughout the Emerald Witch Arc, Diedrich plays a crucial role as a protector and benefactor to Ciel and his household. Initially reluctant, he answers a call for help from Ciel, who is investigating strange occurrences in the Werewolves' Forest of Germany. He arrives at a critical moment to save Ciel from Wolfram Gelzer, engaging the younger and fitter soldier in combat. Using a mix of cunning and physical force, Diedrich is able to hold his own, deflecting attacks and wounding his opponent. When a German military tank appears and begins firing on the group, Diedrich reveals his knowledge of the area, guiding them toward a secret military railway for escape. He loyally follows Ciel's orders, even when given the dangerous task of carrying the suitcase containing samples of the chemical SuLIN. After the group's escape, he provides them refuge at one of his family's castles, Weizsäcker, and uses his resources to arrange for their safe passage back to England.
His most significant relationship is with the Phantomhive family. He was a close confidant and friend to Vincent Phantomhive, a bond forged in the unusual master-servant dynamic of their school days. Vincent trusted him implicitly, even asking Diedrich to take care of his family should something happen to him. This promise is one Diedrich honors by aiding Ciel. As a child, Ciel was afraid of Diedrich because of his intimidating face, but he grew to understand Diedrich's true, reliable nature. Their relationship is marked by a familiar banter; Diedrich frequently complains that Ciel brings him nothing but trouble, just like his father, while Ciel calmly counters his grievances. He also has a brief but noteworthy encounter with the Undertaker in this arc, who visits him in Germany to reminisce about Vincent, a meeting that leaves Diedrich both annoyed and intrigued by the strange mortician's behavior and tears. Despite his complaints and perpetually grumpy disposition, Diedrich's actions are driven by a deep-seated loyalty and a promise made long ago to a friend, making him an indispensable ally in Ciel's most dangerous mission.
