TV-Series
Description
Huo Yan Li is a former Third Generation pyrokinetic who served as the captain of the Special Fire Force Company 1. He is a man in his thirties, born on July 3. He is of average to tall height with a corresponding build. He has short, shaggy blond hair that often falls over the upper half of his face, with eyes that naturally appear closed, and he sports a chin strip beard. As the captain of his brigade, his standard attire consists of a dark cassock topped with a light-colored, high-collared overcoat, a skirt-like garment, dark shoes, and a dark-colored hat. He also wears a pendant bearing a cross-like symbol, a charm common among the commanders of his organization.
In terms of personality, Huo Yan Li is a direct contrast to his former teammates and long-time friends, Rekka Hoshimiya and Karim Flam. He is characterized as being a laid-back and responsible individual who dislikes unnecessary conflict and does not like to get worked up over meaningless fighting. He is a strong adherent to the etiquette and formalities of his company, strictly enforcing rules including the proper dress code. Despite the eventual revelation of significant wrongdoing and corruption within the Holy Sol Church to which his brigade is tied, his personal faith remains firm. He chooses to abide by the institution not for its flawed leadership but for the hope it gives to people during times of tragedy, choosing to worship the Sun and Sun God for the good they represent to the world, in direct opposition to the malicious and destructive ideals of groups like the White-Clad.
Huo Yan Li's motivations and role in the story are deeply tied to his duty, loyalty, and sense of responsibility. Initially serving as a lieutenant, his world is turned when he and Karim Flam discover that their comrade Rekka has been creating artificial Infernals. After they manage to find and restrain Rekka, an archer from the White-Clad kills him with a fire arrow. When the archer prepares to target Karim, Huo Yan pushes him out of the line of fire, losing his own right arm to the arrow in the process. He later reframes the loss of his arm as a test from God. After his commander, Leonard Burns, is killed in action, he is promoted to captain of Company 1, a position he accepts with humility, even commenting that he believes another colleague, Onyango, would be better suited for the role.
His key relationships are most prominently with his former colleagues in Company 1. His dynamic with Karim Flam is particularly strong, as the two share the burden of having witnessed their friend Rekka's betrayal and death, with Huo Yan’s sacrifice creating a lasting bond of loyalty and shared guilt between them. He also interacts with members of other Fire Forces, including watching the powerful Demon Infernal battle against Benimaru Shinmon, and looking on as Company 8's Shinra Kusakabe confronts the forces behind the Great Cataclysm.
Throughout the series, Huo Yan Li demonstrates notable resilience and strength. As a Third Generation pyrokinetic, he possesses the ability to generate his own flames and use them in conjunction with a precise, quick hand-to-hand combat style, allowing him to dispatch Infernals with ease. One of his specific techniques is called the Lantern Fist. Even after the traumatic loss of his right arm, he remains a powerful and capable combatant, adapting his fighting style to his injury. His development sees him step into a major leadership role during a time of intense crisis, rallying his brigade to fight against the fear gripping Tokyo's citizens rather than despairing at the chaos caused by the White-Clad and the Evangelist's plan for a Great Cataclysm. He survives the merging of worlds and the subsequent temporal reset of reality orchestrated by Shinra Kusakabe.
