Description
Medaka Kuroiwa is the central male protagonist of the anime Medaka Kuroiwa is Impervious to My Charms. He is a second-year high school transfer student whose family runs a Buddhist temple. His upbringing has set him on a path to become an ascetic monk, which carries a strict prohibition against falling in love or forming romantic attachments with women. To strengthen his mental discipline and test his ability to resist worldly desires, he enrolls in a co-ed school in Tokyo.

In terms of personality, Medaka initially comes across as stoic, reserved, and somewhat unfriendly. He often wears a stern expression and avoids engaging with classmates who try to get his attention. This aloofness is not born from hostility but from his sincere commitment to his religious training. He frequently mutters the phrase "Mind and body perish" to himself as a way to suppress any rising temptation or emotional reaction. Despite this controlled exterior, Medaka is fundamentally a soft-hearted and well-meaning person. He is thoughtful toward his friends, kind to those in need, and genuinely cares about the people around him. He has a particular fondness for cats and enjoys listening to music.

Medaka’s primary motivation is to honor his family’s tradition and his own aspirations by becoming a monk. He sees his time at a co-ed school as a crucible for self‑improvement, where he must learn to remain unmoved by romantic advances. This creates a central conflict: he is constantly tested by Mona Kawai, the school’s most popular and confident girl, who makes it her mission to make him fall for her. Medaka finds Mona’s personality—both her public persona and her more genuine, unguarded side—genuinely cute and attractive, but he resists acknowledging those feelings as romantic. His struggle is not that he is immune to charm, but that he is actively fighting his own natural reactions.

Within the story, Medaka serves as the anchor for the romantic comedy’s central tension. His refusal to succumb to Mona’s overtures drives the plot forward, as Mona escalates her efforts and, in the process, begins to develop genuine feelings for him. Medaka’s role also extends to his relationships with other characters. He becomes a reliable upperclassman to friends like Asahi Shounan and Tomo Nanba, who see him as kind and dependable. His interactions with other girls who show interest in him further complicate his resolve. He often finds himself in awkward situations that test his discipline, yet he consistently tries to act with integrity.

Over the course of the story, Medaka shows noticeable character development. While he remains committed to his monastic goal, he gradually becomes more open to the possibility that his feelings for Mona are real. He starts to acknowledge moments of attraction and shows concern for her well‑being, even when it means bending his own rules. He also learns to better express his care for others, moving from a purely defensive posture to one that allows for genuine friendship and subtle emotional growth. He still avoids labeling his feelings as love, but his actions betray a deepening bond.

Medaka does not possess supernatural abilities, but his monk training endows him with notable mental fortitude and self‑control. He can resist powerful social pressure and physical temptation that would overwhelm most people his age. His discipline also gives him a calm, measured approach to crises, making him a steady presence in chaotic situations. He has no combat skills or special powers; his strength lies in his resilience, his earnestness, and the quiet, consistent effort he puts into living by his principles.
