TV-Series
Description
Hokuto Umeda serves as the school physician at Osaka Gakuen, an all-boys high school where the majority of the series takes place. He is a strikingly tall man with a lean build and a handsome, sharp-featured face that often carries an aloof or vaguely amused expression. His age is notably more mature than the student body he oversees.

Umeda possesses a personality that is simultaneously aloof, sarcastic, and surprisingly compassionate. He projects a witty and often teasing demeanor, frequently appearing disinterested or exasperated by the antics of the students. However, underneath this prickly exterior lies a person with a very good heart who is reliable and deeply committed to those he considers his friends. He is also known for being something of a playboy, a trait he enjoys given his professional setting surrounded by young men.

His primary role in the story is that of a confidant and protector to the protagonist, Mizuki Ashiya. Umeda is one of the first characters to discover her secret that she is a girl disguised as a boy to attend the male academy. Rather than exposing her, he takes on the role of an older brother figure, offering her constant advice and support in maintaining her secret and navigating her complex feelings for the high jumper Izumi Sano.

The motivations behind his character and his current perspective are significantly shaped by his own past. During his own high school days, Umeda was as aloof and sarcastic as he is as an adult. He developed a deep and lasting romantic love for a charismatic but duplicitous classmate named Ryoichi Kijima. After an initial dislike, Umeda saw through Kijima’s popular, nice-guy facade, and their complicated relationship culminated in a single kiss. While it is suggested that this moment was of little consequence to Kijima, Umeda remained in love with him for the rest of his life. This unrequited, lifelong devotion is a key part of his background and offers insight into his understanding of Mizuki's own powerful feelings.

In terms of key relationships, his most significant bond is with Mizuki Ashiya, whom he guides and protects. He also has a connection to his family, particularly his older sister, Nanba Io, whom he reportedly loathes due to her overbearing and violent personality, which included dressing him in girls' clothing when they were children. This familial dynamic helps explain his often cynical attitude toward women. He is also tied to the central romantic conflict as he supports both Mizuki and the main love interest, Sano Izumi.

Umeda does not possess physical or athletic abilities like the student characters. His principal ability is his keen perceptiveness; he immediately sees through Mizuki's disguise and is generally aware of the complex interpersonal dynamics at the school. His other notable skill is his medical expertise as a licensed physician, which he uses both professionally and to discreetly help Mizuki maintain her secret. He also demonstrates a powerful ability to keep confidences and provide sage, often blunt, emotional advice to the younger protagonists.
