Description
Makoto Kagurazaka is a supporting character in Hana-Kimi who attends Toubou Academy, a rival school to Osaka Gakuen. He is introduced as a star high jumper and the primary athletic rival of Izumi Sano. His background includes his family running a temple, and he has two younger sisters, Tamami and Kyoumi. Makoto is known for his loud, boastful demeanor and often comes across as arrogant and sharp-tongued, with a delinquent-like appearance featuring spiky white hair and an earring. Beneath this rough exterior, however, he possesses a surprisingly simple-minded and kind nature, frequently looking after others in his own blunt way. His motivations center on his intense rivalry with Sano; he constantly teases both Sano and Mizuki Ashiya and seeks to push Sano to return to high jumping at his full potential. In the story, Makoto serves as a foil to Sano, adding tension and humor during inter-school competitions and events. While his role is not central to the main romance plot, his presence reinforces the athletic stakes of the series. His key relationships are with Sano as a rival and with Mizuki, whom he enjoys provoking. Makoto’s notable ability is his high-jump skill, which draws him into competition with Sano and drives much of his interaction with the main cast. Throughout the series, he shows little personal growth beyond softening slightly toward others, as his core traits of arrogance and hidden kindness remain consistent.
