Description
Haruichi Kominato is a second-year student at Seidou High School and serves as the team's primary second baseman, forming one half of the renowned keystone duo with the shortstop. Born on March 1st in Kanagawa Prefecture, he is the younger brother of Ryousuke Kominato, a former star second baseman for Seidou.
Haruichi has a small stature and a youthful, almost frail appearance, which often leads others to mistake him for a girl. His most distinctive features are his pink hair and, prior to the events of Act II, his long bangs which often hid his eyes. After the match against Komadai Fujimaki, he cut his front bangs shorter, making his pink eyes permanently visible. He is known for being a very calm, quiet, and reserved individual. Despite his shy nature, he has a habit of speaking bluntly and can be easily embarrassed when praised. On the team, he frequently acts as the straight man to his close friend and roommate, the pitcher Eijun Sawamura, who often calls him by the nickname Harucchi.
While outwardly gentle, Haruichi possesses a strong inner ambition. His primary motivation is deeply tied to his older brother, Ryousuke. Though he deeply admires his brother, he is driven to surpass him and claim the second base position as his own, a source of subtle rivalry and pride. After the formation of the new team, he secured a regular starting position, initially batting as the third in the lineup (the cleanup spot) before eventually moving to the second batter position, the same spot his brother once held.
At the start of his first year, Haruichi served as a pinch hitter, where he maintained a perfect batting average. His role grew significantly by Act II, becoming a crucial and consistent presence in the heart of Seidou's batting order. He is a close friend to both Sawamura and the ace pitcher Satoru Furuya, and he often inadvertently fuels their rivalry by giving both of them honest praise for their abilities. He shares a complex relationship with his brother Ryousuke; while their competitive dynamic has caused some strain, Haruichi still holds a great deal of respect for him and remembers his brother protecting him from bullies when they were children.
Haruichi's development throughout the series focuses on overcoming his physical limitations. He has worked hard to improve his stamina, which was initially a weakness. Another key part of his growth involved his batting style. He stubbornly uses a heavier, less forgiving wooden bat instead of the standard metal bat, believing it is necessary to catch up to his brother's skill level. After struggling with a lack of power on the national stage, he became determined to increase the speed of his swing through rigorous practice, such as tee batting from difficult positions.
Haruichi is a naturally talented all-rounder, noted for his exceptional baseball sense which allows him to make split-second decisions on where to hit the ball, what to watch for, and when to steal a base. His greatest ability is his pinpoint batting precision. As a contact hitter, he can control exactly where the ball will land, directing it to any field he pleases. On defense, he is extremely agile, able to catch and throw the ball while still in motion. His small stature and use of a wooden bat limit his raw power, making him less likely to hit home runs compared to power hitters, but his consistency and ability to get on base are virtually unmatched on the team.
