Description
Kensei Kuroto is a central character in Code Geass: Rozé of the Recapture, serving as the charismatic and respected leader of the Seven Shining Stars, a resistance group operating in the northern regions of Japan against the occupying forces of Neo-Britannia. His background is rooted in a long history of military service. Before leading the Seven Shining Stars, he was a former member of the Japan Liberation Front and also served as the captain of the personal guard for Jugo Ko, the former governor of the Hokkaido Block. This position gave him a past connection to Sakuya Sumeragi, the daughter of his former liege, whom he knew personally. His reputation as a formidable soldier is underscored by a saying that spread during the invasion of Japan: "Tohdoh in the West, Kuroto in the East," comparing his prowess to that of the renowned strategist Kyoshiro Tohdoh.

In terms of appearance, Kensei Kuroto is a veteran soldier marked by his experiences. He has short, dark gray hair and a robust, imposing stature. His most distinguishing feature is a large, prominent scar that runs across his forehead and over his left eye, lending him the rugged and dignified aura of a battle-hardened commander. His eyes are brown, and his overall presence is one of quiet authority and unwavering resolve.

Kensei Kuroto's personality is defined by his directness, honesty, and exceptional loyalty. He is a man of principle who inspires deep trust and respect among his subordinates, who follow him willingly. As a commander, he is a master strategist who keeps a cool head in tense situations, making him an effective leader on the battlefield. However, his reserved and serious nature often makes him awkward in personal and family matters, particularly with his daughter, Haruka Rutaka. His speech can be somewhat old-fashioned, leading to comically serious moments, such as when he asks his daughter if she has a "fella" using outdated slang. Despite this awkwardness, his deep-seated care and protective instincts for his loved ones are unmistakable.

At the beginning of the story, Kensei Kuroto is introduced in a dire situation: he is a prisoner in the Abashiri labor camp, captured along with several of his comrades and awaiting execution. He is rescued thanks to the intervention of Rozé, who is secretly Sakuya Sumeragi using her Geass power to take control of the camp. Upon his rescue, Sakuya reveals her true identity to him, and he becomes one of the few characters who knows that Rozé is not a mercenary but his former lord's daughter. Grateful for her father's loyalty and determined to help, he agrees without hesitation to aid her mission to rescue her double, Sakura, who is being held as a political hostage. After reuniting with his group, he retakes command of the Seven Shining Stars and leads them in a continued fight against Neo-Britannia.

Throughout the conflict, Kensei Kuroto primarily acts as a strategist, preferring to coordinate and direct operations from a mobile command vehicle rather than piloting a Knightmare Frame himself. However, when he does take to the cockpit, he is known as an exceptionally skilled pilot, with a legendary mastery of the lance in combat. His tactical acumen is crucial during key missions, such as orchestrating the group's survival during a Neo-Britannia attack and commanding operations to shut down barriers or assault the Damocles fortress. He also plays a key role in forming alliances with other resistance forces, like the Eastern Wind Brigade and the North Wolf Army, to achieve their common goals.

One of the most significant developments for his character is the late-stage revelation of his relationship with Haruka Rutaka, the ace pilot of the Seven Shining Stars, who is revealed to be his biological daughter. This revelation recontextualizes many of their prior interactions and adds a deep emotional layer to his character, as his often-stoic and awkward demeanor is shown to mask a father's concern and affection. After the fall of the main antagonist, Noland von Lüneberg, and the dissolution of the Seven Shining Stars, Kensei Kuroto takes Haruka to visit the grave of his wife, her mother, signifying a new beginning for their family and his renewed commitment to serving Sakuya Sumeragi.
