Description
Bunta Marui is a third-year student and a regular member of the tennis team at Rikkaidai University Affiliated Middle School. He stands 164 centimeters tall and has distinctive bright red-pink hair, a trait that makes him easily recognizable. Known as a volley specialist, Marui is widely considered one of the best serve-and-volley players among middle schoolers in Japan. He is almost always seen chewing bubble gum, even during official matches, and he has a well-known habit of eating an entire strawberry cake before competing to ensure he has enough energy.

Marui has a bright, confident, and generally carefree personality. He is extremely self-assured regarding his abilities, frequently referring to himself and his techniques as genius-level. This playful arrogance is balanced by a sociable nature, as he treats his matches as a form of entertainment for spectators. Despite his laid-back demeanor, he has a responsible and caring side, acting as a supportive senior to his underclassmen and taking his role within the team seriously. This is partly attributed to his home life, where he helps care for his two younger brothers. His motto is to eat, sleep, and play well, reflecting his straightforward and pleasure-driven outlook.

Within the story, Marui is a key member of the dominant Rikkaidai team. His primary role on the court is as a doubles specialist, where he typically partners with his close friend, Jackal Kuwahara. This pair is often referred to as the Platinum Pair, with Marui controlling the net offense while Jackal covers the backcourt. He also shares a bond with the younger and more volatile Akaya Kirihara, whom he and Jackal often look after. His exceptional volleying skills have earned him the admiration of other players, most notably Jiro Akutagawa from Hyotei Academy, who changed his own playing style to emulate Marui after losing to him in a tournament.

In the U-17 training camp and subsequent World Cup, Marui continues to evolve. He demonstrates his adaptability by forming a temporary but effective doubles partnership with Eishiro Kite. During this period, he develops a new defensive technique called Wonder Castle, which allows him to counter almost all shots from the net position. He also shows a willingness to make difficult strategic decisions for the benefit of his team, as seen when he made a private agreement to secure funding for captain Seiichi Yukimura's medical treatment. He is ultimately selected as a member of the Japanese representative team, holding the number seven position among the middle schoolers.

Marui possesses several notable tennis techniques. His signature moves include Tightrope Walking, where he hits a volley that rolls along the top of the net cord before dropping onto the opponent's side, and Iron Pole Strike, where the ball is hit off the net post to change direction unpredictably. Another technique, Temporal Difference Hell, uses a fake swing to disrupt the opponent's timing on a smash. To address his relatively lower stamina, he relies on sugar intake from chewing gum and pre-match cakes, and he also wears power wristbands that add weight to his arms during practice and matches, removing them only when he needs to play at full strength. His official U-17 statistics rank his technique at the highest level, while his stamina and power are noted as areas for improvement.
