Description
Madara, also known as Nyanko-sensei, is a major character in Natsume's Book of Friends. He is a high-level flying white wolf daiyokai, a type of powerful spirit, who most often appears in the form of a maneki-neko, or lucky cat. He was once sealed in a shrine for a long period before being accidentally freed by the protagonist, Takashi Natsume. Because he had been trapped in a material form for so long, he continues to take this cat-like shape, which has the advantage of being visible to ordinary humans. Natsume passes him off as a pet, and the resulting nickname Nyanko-sensei becomes the name by which he is most commonly known.

Madara's personality is a study in contrasts. He is immensely powerful and ancient, possessing knowledge and strength that command respect among other yokai. However, he also has a very immature and playful side. He is famously gluttonous, with a deep love for food and drink, especially dango and sake, and he often indulges to the point of drunkenness or laziness. He is sarcastic, loves being in the spotlight, and can be quite vain, frequently showing off or making jokes. Despite this, he is also wise and perceptive, acting as a mentor and spiritual advisor to Natsume.

His primary motivation at the start of the series is simple: he wants to possess the Book of Friends, a collection of names belonging to spirits once bound by Natsume's grandmother, Reiko. He makes a deal with Natsume to act as his bodyguard and protector from other malicious spirits who would harm the boy to get the book. Madara's openly stated plan is to inherit the Book of Friends after Natsume dies. Over the course of the series, however, his motivations become more complex. While he still outwardly maintains this selfish goal, he develops a genuine attachment to Natsume, often going out of his way to protect him and showing clear concern for his well-being, even as he tries to deny it.

In the story, Madara serves as Natsume's constant companion, bodyguard, and guide through the world of yokai. He is the one who keeps Natsume safe from countless dangers, using his immense power to intimidate or fight off threats. He also provides practical advice, teaches Natsume about spirit customs, and occasionally performs spells. Beyond his role as a protector, he is a source of much of the series' humor, with his lazy antics, love of food, and frequent bickering with Natsume providing a counterbalance to the more emotional and sometimes somber encounters with other spirits.

The most important relationship in the series for Madara is his bond with Takashi Natsume. It begins as a transactional agreement but slowly deepens into a genuine, if grudging, friendship and partnership. Madara also knew Natsume's grandmother, Reiko, when she was alive, which adds a layer of history to his involvement. He interacts with many other yokai and humans, often acting as a blunt and honest counterpart to Natsume's more gentle nature. He has a rivalry of sorts with some other powerful spirits, and he often clashes with Natsume's human friends, though he will ultimately protect them if needed.

Madara undergoes subtle development throughout the series. While he remains the same gluttonous and sarcastic spirit on the surface, his actions increasingly reveal a deep loyalty and care for Natsume. He begins to see Natsume not just as a temporary holder of the Book of Friends, but as a companion he genuinely wants to keep safe, even if he would never openly admit it. This growing bond is at the heart of his character journey.

As a yokai, Madara possesses a number of notable abilities. His true form is a massive, flying white wolf, which is intimidating enough to scare off most other spirits. In this form, he has immense physical strength and the power of flight. He is a highly skilled shapeshifter, most often taking the form of the lucky cat, but he can also transform into the human likeness of Reiko or Natsume. He has extensive knowledge of the supernatural world, including spirits, spells, and ancient lore. He can sense the presence of other yokai and can use his spiritual power for protection and offence. Despite his lazy appearance, he is consistently portrayed as one of the most powerful beings in the series.
