Description
In the sequel series Four Knights of the Apocalypse, Meliodas appears in a significantly altered role from his days as the wandering captain of the Seven Deadly Sins. He has become the King of the Kingdom of Liones, having been appointed to the throne by the previous monarch, Bartra Liones, due to his age and Meliodas’s status as a hero within the kingdom. Despite his new royal duties, he maintains his connection to his past by permanently relocating his famous tavern, the Boar Hat, to the kingdom.

Meliodas retains his distinctive and deceptively youthful appearance, which has long contrasted with his true age of over three thousand years. Standing at only 152 centimeters tall, he continues to look like a child, a trait that often belies his immense power and experience. His personality remains a mixture of lightheartedness and a more serious, strategic core. He is often cheerful and can exhibit a perverted, playful side, particularly with his wife, Elizabeth. However, this facade hides a deeply caring and protective nature, especially when it comes to his family and kingdom. He is also a capable and respected leader, demonstrating significant authority as king while still engaging directly with newcomers.

Meliodas’s primary motivation in Four Knights of the Apocalypse is to protect his family and the kingdom of Liones from the rising threat of Arthur Pendragon and the forces of Chaos. Having previously defeated Arthur, he is prepared to unite with new knights to face him once again. He takes a direct interest in the young knight Percival, the series' protagonist, recognizing the imminent danger to the world and implying that Percival may have a crucial role to play in saving it.

His role in the story shifts from that of a frontline fighter to a mentor and a strategic anchor. He serves as a figure of stability and authority, welcoming Percival and his companions to Liones and providing them with context about the world’s peril. Meliodas is also a key participant in the defense of Liones, fighting alongside the Holy Knights and the Four Knights of Apocalypse when the kingdom is invaded by Chaos-empowered enemies like Melascula and Galand.

Key relationships define his character in this new era. His marriage to Elizabeth Liones is central; she is now the queen, and together they rule Liones. Their son, Tristan, is a young man of sixteen and is one of the Four Knights of the Apocalypse, a fact Meliodas alludes to when speaking with Percival. Meliodas’s interactions with the new generation of knights, particularly Percival, highlight his transition into a paternal and guiding figure. He explains details about his tavern, discusses the nature of the threat, and offers a sense of perspective drawn from his long history.

In terms of development, the Meliodas seen in Four Knights of the Apocalypse is the culmination of his lengthy journey from the original series. He has achieved his primary goal of breaking the curse that bound him and Elizabeth, allowing them to finally live peacefully together. He has moved from being a cursed, wandering sin to a settled king and family man. His character arc has reached a point of relative peace and stability, though he is clearly prepared to take up arms again to defend what he has built.

Notable abilities are an integral part of his character, even if he is not the primary focus of combat. Meliodas is a member of the Demon Clan and the eldest son of the former Demon King, possessing immense natural power. He is widely recognized as the strongest member of the Seven Deadly Sins. His signature ability is Full Counter, which allows him to instantly deflect any magical attack directed at him back at his opponent with doubled power. He has also demonstrated a fearsome transformation known as Assault Mode, which unleashes his full demonic power, though this state is associated with a more violent and ruthless mindset. After spending years in Purgatory, his base power increased tremendously, making him an overwhelmingly powerful entity capable of standing against the Demon King. Even as king, his presence alone signifies a level of protection for the Kingdom of Liones that few forces in the world could hope to challenge.
