Description
Han Song-I is a supporting character who appears in the second season of the anime. She is a young South Korean girl who is both a high school student and an E-Rank Hunter. As a close friend of Sung Jinah, the sister of the protagonist Sung Jinwoo, she moves within the Sung family's social circle. Physically, she is recognized by her black bob-cut hair, black eyes, and a distinctive beauty mark located right under her left eye. Her typical raid attire consists of casual and practical clothing, such as a hoodie, a black cap, a gray skirt, and black leggings.
At the outset, Han Song-I's personality is characterized by a certain recklessness and a lack of concern for her education. Captivated by the wealth and fame often associated with successful high-rank Hunters, she makes the impulsive decision to drop out of high school at the age of eighteen. She is initially described as somewhat rude and primarily motivated by financial gain, believing that working as a Hunter, even at a low rank, is a quick and easy way to earn money. Her motivations are purely economic and driven by a naive view of the profession, having been drawn to the fast cash that even minimal Hunter work can provide without fully understanding the associated dangers.
Her role in the story is significant as a character who represents the naivety of low-rank Hunters. Jinwoo, upon learning from his sister's teacher that his friend has abandoned her studies, becomes concerned for her safety. He recognizes the reckless nature of her choice, especially given her very low rank and lack of combat skills. In an effort to demonstrate the harsh and brutal reality of a Hunter's life, Jinwoo arranges for her to join what is supposed to be a simple training raid with the White Tiger Guild. This plan goes horribly awry when the dungeon they enter transforms into a dangerous Red Gate, a phenomenon that traps them in a deadly, snow-covered landscape from which escape is only possible by defeating the dungeon boss.
Her key relationships are primarily with the Sung family. She is a close friend and classmate of Sung Jinah, and their bond remains consistent throughout the story. Her most important relationship develops with Sung Jinwoo. Initially, she is a distant acquaintance, but her experience inside the Red Gate changes everything. While trapped, she witnesses Jinwoo's overwhelming power as he protects her and the remaining survivors from powerful monsters like ice bears and ice elves. After he defeats the dungeon boss, Baruka, and ensures the group's safe return, she becomes deeply grateful and develops a clear admiration for him. A sign of this changed relationship is when she starts addressing him by his first name instead of a more formal title.
The Red Gate incident serves as the catalyst for her entire character development. The near-death experience completely shatters her previous illusions about the life of a Hunter. Left deeply rattled and traumatized by the event, she makes the mature decision to retire from being a Hunter and return to school to finish her education, recognizing that the dangers of the job far outweigh the financial rewards. Despite her retirement, the experience instills in her a sense of bravery that manifests later, as she shows a willingness to stand her ground against powerful magical beasts, knowing she has no chance of winning.
In terms of abilities, Han Song-I is a canonical E-Rank Hunter, which places her at the very bottom of the power hierarchy. Her combat skills are practically nonexistent, and her physical capabilities are only slightly above those of an average, untrained human. She is unable to contribute meaningfully to any fight against even low-level monsters and is constantly in need of protection from higher-ranked Hunters. Her value to a raid party is essentially negligible, as she lacks the strength to be of any real use in a dungeon. In non-canonical adaptations, such as video games based on the series, her abilities are greatly expanded for gameplay purposes, but these portrayals do not reflect her true capabilities within the main story.
