Description
Akitsu Akane is a fifteen year old player within the world of the immersive video game Shangri-La Frontier and a key member of the Wolfgang clan. Her real name is Akane Oki, and she was born on March 25. Standing at 156 centimeters tall, she has a slender but athletic build that reflects her background as a competitive runner. In the game, her avatar is recognizable by its long blue hair, usually tied back, and bright green eyes. She almost always wears a fox mask that covers part of her face, a choice made to hide a curse mark she received from a powerful monster. Her typical outfit is a sleeveless ninja costume paired with a hakama, which suits her chosen in-game class.
Akane is best described as the embodiment of a positive and energetic personality, a true "sports girl" at heart. She is exceptionally honest and direct, sometimes to the point of saying things she should not, but her intentions are always good and she never tries to deceive others. Her nature is so overwhelmingly bright that other players have nicknamed her the "light side" of the Wolfgang clan, and even cynical characters find it difficult to act dishonestly around her. She hates giving up and despises inaction or a lack of effort, believing that running and facing problems head-on can solve most issues. While she is usually upbeat, her spirits can dampen slightly if she gets caught in the rain, revealing a slightly more vulnerable side.
Before becoming a notable figure in Shangri-La Frontier, Akane had a background in real-world athletics. As a child, she was often sickly, which motivated her to start running to build up her health. Her hard work paid off, and she became a skilled enough sprinter to reach the top eight in national athletic meets. Her family gave her a virtual reality console as a reward for these achievements. Because she had little pocket money for expensive new games, she bought several cheap, unpopular titles, including a notoriously bug-ridden fighting game called Berserk Online Passion. It was in this game, playing under the name Dragonfly, that she first met the player Sunraku, engaging in many practice matches with him and forming a lasting friendship.
In Shangri-La Frontier, Akane chose the main class of Ninja and the subclass of Swordsman, primarily because she thought the ninja aesthetic was cool. Her playstyle is a hybrid of high-energy improvisation and fast, analytical adaptation. She possesses an almost cheat-like level of luck, often defying the game's "desire sensor" to get rare drops and activate special scenarios without any hints. Her natural communication skills are also a powerful asset, allowing her to befriend even difficult non-player characters. Her notable ninja abilities include the Utsusemi technique, which lets her teleport by swapping places with a log, chain techniques to bind enemies, and several fireball attacks of varying sizes. She also has a unique and powerful ability called Dragon's Breath, which mimics a dragon's attack and whose damage is directly influenced by her own real-life lung capacity. Other skills include techniques to walk on air temporarily, reduce fall damage with a cloth parachute, and create illusions to draw enemy aggression away from her allies.
Akane's role in the story is that of a close ally and one of the most important members of Sunraku's group. After meeting Sunraku in the buggy fighting game, she becomes his trusted friend and companion in Shangri-La Frontier. Before reuniting with him, she boldly challenged the unique monster Siegwurm the Sky Ruler on her own and was marked with a curse. This courageous act led to her being invited by Ceecrue to join the exclusive Rabbits guild, making her only the second player after Sunraku to receive such an honor. She later joins Sunraku, Psyger-0, Rust, and Mold in major battles, including the fight against the night stalker Lycaon and the deep-sea creature Kuturnid. Following these victories, she formally joins their player clan, Wolfgang.
Her most significant achievement comes during an event in a new continent. Through a combination of sheer luck and her charismatic personality, she befriends the black dragon Noir Lindh and simultaneously activates two unique scenarios. She becomes the key figure in reconciling two rival factions, the Dragonewts and the Lizardmen, and leads them in a great war against Siegwurm. During the final battle, she lands the decisive blow on the colossal monster. For these deeds, she tames Noir Lindh, unlocks the advanced Dragon Saint Ninja class, shares the method with other players, and earns the title of "Dragon Princess," becoming an idol among ninja-class players. Her popularity and unconventional methods become so influential that the game's developers briefly consider banning her for straying from their intended scenario, but they ultimately acknowledge her contributions.
