Description
The character known as Professeur, who plays the game under the name Professor, is a supporting character in the anime Shangri-La Frontier. His real name is Honosuke Rindo, and in the virtual world of Shangri-La Frontier he leads a player clan called the Library, a group devoted to uncovering the hidden lore and mysteries of the game.
In real life, Honosuke Rindo is a 64-year-old university professor, identified in some materials as an archaeology professor. He is 167 centimeters tall and weighs 55 kilograms, and his birthday falls on June 5th. His in-game avatar presents a striking contrast to his real identity: it is a cute magical girl with pink twin tails, a youthful appearance that clashes sharply with the deep, elderly voice that comes from him. This gap between how his avatar looks and how he actually sounds has become a defining trait of the character.
In terms of personality, he is scholarly, thoughtful, and intensely curious. He is far more interested in knowledge and understanding than in combat, approaching the game as a subject to be studied rather than a competition to be won. He is also direct and earnest in his dealings with others, and he shows no discomfort about the strange mismatch between his avatar and his real-life identity.
His main motivation is to solve the deepest puzzles of Shangri-La Frontier and to learn the truth of the game's world. To accomplish this, the Library gathers information through a wide network of contacts among many players and clans, which has made the group well known within the player community. His pursuit of knowledge is what leads him to seek out the protagonist Sunraku, after he learns that one of the players who defeated the powerful unique monster Wethermon the Tombguard wore the ritual medjed keffiyeh, the same headpiece Sunraku wears.
In the story, Professeur first appears in the town of Eighthold toward the end of the first season. There he approaches Sunraku, who is puzzled that what appears to be a random magical girl player is seeking him out. Professeur introduces himself as the head of the Library clan and asks Sunraku to join him in discovering the truth about the world. He sends Sunraku a friend request, which Sunraku accepts, establishing a partnership in which Professeur agrees to share everything the Library knows so that the two of them can tackle the game's most difficult riddles together.
Among his key relationships, his partnership with Sunraku is the most notable, built on mutual curiosity and a shared interest in the game's hidden depths. He is also married, and his wife plays the same game under the name Massive Dynamite, belonging to the same clan. As the leader of the Library, he oversees the clan's research and coordinates its larger information network.
In terms of abilities, his strength lies in knowledge and information rather than direct combat. He functions as a sage or librarian figure, relying on research, analysis, and the collective intelligence of his clan. His most significant asset is therefore his access to a broad body of in-game knowledge and his ability to put that information to use in the search for Shangri-La Frontier's hidden truths.
