Chizu Yamamura, an elderly woman with gray hair streaked by purple-tipped ends, brown eyes, and round armless glasses, serves as the steadfast grandmother and primary caregiver to Kumiko "Josee" Yamamura, a wheelchair user residing with her in Osaka. Driven by protective instincts shaped by Josee’s paraplegia and societal barriers, Chizu enforces strict limitations on her granddaughter’s contact with the outside world, maintaining a sheltered existence. Yet her resolve occasionally softens, as seen when she invites Tsuneo Suzukawa—a university student who rescues Josee from an accident—into their home, unknowingly catalyzing Josee’s tentative steps toward broader experiences. Chizu’s abrupt death from a heart attack fractures this guarded dynamic, thrusting Josee into navigating independence while confronting external demands to relinquish their home.
