Description
Jinka, also known as Yamato Jinka, is a central figure in the story who begins as a human with a deep and genuine hatred for humanity. Born with a unique trait called the Fairy Eye, he was taken in and trained by the immortal Kurogetsusai, becoming a martial artist known as the Phoenix Slayer. His bitter outlook on humans stems from a childhood trauma when he witnessed a friend being killed near a battlefield, fostering a belief that people are defined by their worst instincts and cruelty. Despite traveling with Tama, a katawara who loves humans and seeks peace, Jinka barely tolerates his human companions, following Tama's lead due to an unexplained pact between them.

Personality-wise, Jinka is stubborn, prideful, and genuinely misanthropic. Unlike other characters who play the villain as an act, his contempt for humanity is authentic and deeply rooted. He is extremely cold toward humans but paradoxically kind to katawara, viewing them as superior. His pride often leads him into reckless confrontations, as seen when he refuses to accept defeat by a human opponent named Zanzou Raidou, returning for a rematch driven more by wounded ego than any noble purpose. However, he is not without complexity. He possesses a sagacious and wise nature for his age, and as he spends time with companions like Shinsuke and Shakugan, he gradually begins to open his heart to humans, even if he resists this change.

Jinka's primary motivation is to transcend his own humanity and become a katawara. He actively researches becoming a being of darkness, driven by the wish to one day marry Tama once he achieves that form. This desire for transformation and his hatred of humans propel his initial journey, but his motivations evolve as he faces challenges that force him to confront his own human reactions, such as when a young boy's selfless act short-circuits his cynical worldview.

His role in the story shifts dramatically over time. In the first part of the narrative, he serves as a primary protagonist, using his formidable powers to battle katawara hunters and violent warlords. His journey leads him to confront powerful enemies, including the monk Yazen. During a decisive battle, he consumes the flesh of the mountain god Taizan to gain enough power, unlocking his full potential. He transforms into a nine-tailed fox, but the power overwhelms him, causing him to transform further into a rampaging divine beast known as the Thousand-Tailed Fox, destroying everything in his path. After this event, he disappears for a long period, and his role shifts into that of a goal for other characters to find or stop, becoming a missing presence whose threat looms over the second part of the story.

Key relationships heavily influence his development. His bond with Tama is the most significant; she acts as his moral anchor, and he vows to marry her once he becomes a katawara. Shinsuke Hyoudou serves as a foil to Jinka, and their interactions help push Jinka's growth. The mountain god also plays a crucial role, training Jinka and ultimately becoming a source of power when he consumes her flesh to fuel his transformation.

Jinka undergoes profound development, though not always in a positive direction. He starts as a hate-filled youth, briefly shows hints of re-examining his worldview when confronted with human selflessness, but then backslides due to his overwhelming pride. After achieving immense power and losing his sanity, he becomes a threat to both humans and katawara alike. It is only later, after being controlled by outside forces and then saved by the intervention of Tama, Shinsuke, and Shakugan, that he regains his sanity. He ultimately returns to a peaceful life, marrying Tama and living in the mountain cabin where he originally resided.

In terms of abilities, Jinka is a formidable warrior who uses a five-element staff and talismans in combat. His signature power is Spirit Transformation, which he activates after tasting Tama's blood. This grants him the features of a fox spirit and produces tails from his back, each controlling a different elemental attribute. He starts with four tails, representing the elements of wood, fire, earth, and water. As his spiritual power awakens through training and battle, he gains additional tails for metal, thunder, wind, and finally, two tails representing Heaven and Darkness. His ultimate techniques combine these elements, such as the Five Elements Soul, which fuses the power of the five primary elements into a devastating energy mass. After transforming into the Thousand-Tailed Fox, his power multiplies exponentially, allowing him to use techniques like Hundred Fold Oblivion, which creates a void that erases whatever it touches. His Fairy Eyes also grant him extrasensory perception, allowing him to see auras and predict an opponent's next moves.
