Description
Hanatora is the former Great Land God of Kyo, a powerful divine spirit tied to the capital city. She is a female deity with a highly distinctive and eccentric personality, most notably adamant about refusing to wear clothes, a quirk that defines much of her unconventional nature. Despite her immense power and status as a god, she has lived in close proximity to humans for a very long time, and as a result, holds a genuine and deep affection for them. She is particularly fond of the shogun Ashikaga Yoshiteru and the swordsman Shinsuke Hyoudou, appreciating their strengths and characters in a way that is both warm and, at times, playful to the point of being forward.

Her personality is free-spirited, exuberant, and mischievous. She possesses a blunt honesty that can be both refreshing and startling, and she does not adhere to typical divine decorum. This is perhaps best exemplified by her repeated and direct advances towards Shinsuke Hyoudou, whom she frequently urges to "become hers," only to be lightly and humorously brushed off each time. This behavior is not born of malice but rather from a place of sincere liking and a desire for companionship. She is also a protector at heart, demonstrating a fierce sense of responsibility for the humans under her watch, especially during times of crisis.

During the tragic Eiroku Incident, Hanatora took decisive action to protect the people of the Imperial Palace. She created a barrier to relocate all the residents to a village on the outskirts of the capital, sparing them from the catastrophe that befell their home. The only individuals she did not save in this manner were Yoshiteru, Zanzou, and Shinsuke. However, a consequence of this evacuation was that the swordsmen Shinsuke and Zanzou, having been touched by her spiritual power to serve as anchors for the teleportation, became bound to the land around the village. This left them unable to leave, effectively becoming land gods themselves but stripped of the associated spiritual powers.

Her protective instincts extend to training the next generation. Following the Eiroku incident, she took the young warriors Senya and Tsukiko under her wing and subjected them to eight years of rigorous training within the village. This period of intense development was crucial in preparing them for the greater challenges they would face later in their journey. While her training methods are harsh, she is willing to invest significant time and effort into making humans stronger. She is an acquaintance and close friend of another great deity, Ooyamatsuchihime, and their conversations are marked by a casual familiarity that includes commenting on each other's ruthless approaches to training humans, acknowledging each other as kindred spirits in that regard.

As a divine being, Hanatora commands a vast array of supernatural abilities. Her most distinctive power is the creation of multiple avatars or incarnations of herself. Each of these avatars can have a different appearance, personality, and speech pattern, though the form that appears most frequently in the story is that of a young girl. She has demonstrated powers of duplication, plant manipulation, telekinesis via floating capsules that can fire homing attacks, and intangibility, allowing her to pass through solid matter. She can manipulate souls, having once created a sword from Yoshiteru's soul, and is capable of flight, sleep manipulation, and precognition, as one of her clones was able to warn Senya of a future threat. Furthermore, she has shown abilities related to mind manipulation, such as controlling the minds of Kyoto's citizens to prevent them from engaging in war, and using paper-based shikigami for illusion creation. Her power level is considerable, rated as at least mountain level, making her a formidable force superior to many of the human and demon characters in the series.
