Description
Mai Kōnoike is a resident doctor at Ten’ikai General Hospital, initially assigned to the Emergency Department. As a first-year resident, she is in the early stages of her clinical training, which eventually brings her to the General Diagnostic Department to learn under the hospital’s most brilliant diagnostician. She lives in a women’s dormitory adjacent to the hospital.

Kōnoike has a personality that balances professionalism with a playful, sometimes mischievous side. While her demeanor is usually lighthearted and even gossipy, she is capable of acting with great efficiency and seriousness when an emergency patient arrives. In her daily life at the hospital, she enjoys spreading rumors, particularly about the relationship between her superior, Takao Ameku, and the physician Yu Takanashi. She actively tries to bring the two closer together by finding interesting or puzzling medical cases and prompting Takanashi to report them to Ameku. Initially, she felt intimidated and found it difficult to speak directly to Ameku, but as time passes, she grows more comfortable, eventually exchanging personal messages with her and going shopping together.

Her primary motivation is a deep admiration for the diagnostic skill of Takao Ameku. This admiration intensifies significantly after a pivotal event in which she is suspected of murder in a case referred to as The Phantom Operating Room. When she is on the verge of being arrested, Ameku successfully proves her innocence and saves her. From that point forward, her initial intimidation transforms into a strong sense of reverence and loyalty, solidifying her desire to learn from and be close to the genius doctor.

In the story, Kōnoike serves as a supporting member of the medical team, often working alongside Yu Takanashi. While her role as a resident involves assisting with patient care, her actions also help to drive social dynamics within the group. Her relationship with Takanashi is one of friendly collaboration, and she uses him as a go-between to communicate with Ameku. Her relationship with Ameku evolves from one of distant awe to a closer, more personal mentor-student dynamic. She is so entertained by Ameku’s eccentric and dramatic methods that she even nicknames the chief doctor’s behavior “the Takao Ameku Theater.”

Kōnoike possesses several notable abilities beyond standard medical practice. She demonstrates remarkable efficiency and swift judgment when responding to critical patients. Physically, she is unexpectedly strong and capable, having practiced aikido during her childhood. This martial arts training proves useful in dangerous situations, as she is able to subdue suspects and physically intervene during incidents. She also has a strong affinity for motorcycles; her beloved personal vehicle is a Kawasaki Z1000. This motorcycle is wrecked during a rescue operation in an incident called The Fiery Weapon, where she sacrifices it by crashing it into a wall to save Yu Takanashi from a fire. As compensation for her loss, Takanashi later gifts her a brand new Suzuki GSX1300R Hayabusa.
