Description
Harghent the Still serves as the Sixth General of the Twenty-Nine Officials, the ruling body of the city-state of Aureatia. Despite holding this prestigious rank, he is often mocked by his peers with the derogatory nickname Wing Clipper, a reference to his frequent assignment to mundane and low-risk missions, particularly those involving wyvern extermination.
In terms of appearance, Harghent is an aging man who has visibly lost the physical fitness of his younger days. He is depicted with dark, greying hair and a neat mustache, typically wearing a blue tunic and a red cape as his uniform. His personality is defined by a strong sense of honor and a deep, burning ambition to achieve greater power and renown. He is acutely aware of his own limitations in talent and intelligence, yet this does not deter him. Instead, he is willing to charge headfirst into dangerous situations when his personal values are at stake, demonstrating a resilience that eventually earns him a grudging respect from even the most powerful beings.
A central facet of Harghents character is his complex and strained relationship with Alus the Star Runner. In his youth, Harghent encountered the mutant wyvern who would become Alus and provided him with shelter. However, upon hearing of Aluss later exploits and immense power, Harghents feelings curdled into a deep and enduring jealousy, causing him to view the wyvern as his sworn rival.
Harghents role in the story is primarily as a military leader navigating a world overrun by demigod-level fighters known as Shura. During the war against Lithia, he led an expedition to kill the wounded dragon Vikeon the Smoldering, only to see his forces annihilated and his quarry stolen by the intervention of Alus. This event, which occurred at Tileet Ravine, established a pattern of humiliation for Harghent, as Alus repeatedly appeared to decimate enemy forces that Harghent was struggling against, including a wyvern army attacking Mage City. Despite his frustration, Harghent proved his tactical acumen by rallying the demoralized troops and seizing the opportunity created by Alus to break the siege and march on the enemy capital of Lithia.
Later, Harghent embarked on an expedition to Igania Ice Lake in the company of the warrior Lagrex the Butchering Landslide. While Lagrex sought to prove his strength by slaying the legendary dragon Lucunoca the Winter, Harghents true purpose was to recruit the dragon as his champion for the Sixways Exhibition. When Lagrex was grievously wounded after failing to land a single strike on the apathetic dragon, Harghent threw himself between them. Instead of begging for mercy, he expressed understanding of the dragons disappointment with unworthy challengers and piqued her curiosity by speaking of Alus the Star Runner. This act of courage and cleverness successfully convinced Lucunoca to accompany him back to Aureatia.
His development is marked by a struggle to find relevance in a world of monsters. Though he begins as a figure of mockery, his willingness to face overwhelming danger and adapt his strategies proves unexpectedly effective. While his jealousy festers, his journey to recruit Lucunoca showcases a shift from a commander solely reliant on conventional military tactics to one who learns to navigate and negotiate with forces beyond his control.
In terms of notable abilities, despite his age, Harghent retains strong physical fitness, allowing him to survive the hostile landscape of Igania Ice Lake and infiltration missions behind enemy lines. He is an experienced officer capable of effective command, able to rally broken troops and lead a reckless but successful counterattack. He also possesses officer-level engineering skills, using a technique called Craft Arts to shape steel into a massive ballista named the Dragon Slayer, which he can fire unaided. Most importantly, he is a specialist in wyvern extermination, with a lifetime of experience that allows him to instantly identify the tactics of airborne enemies and track their commanders amidst the chaos of battle.
