Description
Kazuki the Black Tone is a formidable character from the anime Ishura, distinguished as a Visitor, an individual banished from another world due to possessing power deemed too unnatural and immense for their original realm. Her reputation precedes her as a legendary mercenary and marksman, having introduced the very concept of firearms to the world in which she now finds herself. Nine years prior to the main events of the story, during the age when the True Demon King still lived, Kazuki single-handedly liberated a northern city turned into an impregnable labyrinth known as the Great Ice Bastion from a self-proclaimed demon king. This feat became a vivid legend of that dark era, cementing her status as a renowned figure.
As a soldier from the Beyond, Kazuki carries herself with the discipline and tactical acumen of someone with extensive military training and real-world combat experience. Her personality is that of a calculating and pragmatic professional, approaching objectives like a military operation. When she was hired to lay siege to the Free City of Okafu, she systematically wore down the city’s military strength by first assassinating its most powerful mercenaries and soldiers outside the safety of its walls. Only after this gradual attrition did she commence her full invasion, demonstrating a cold and efficient strategic mind. Her motivations are largely tied to her existence as a Visitor. She seeks to protect herself and her fellow Visitors from severe public backlash, having discovered that the True Demon King, the entity responsible for massacring most of the Minia races and nearly destroying civilization, was also a Visitor. She deliberately hid this information from the world. Her actions as a mercenary are also driven by a personal feud with a fellow Visitor, Morio the Sentinel, and she agreed to work for Haade the Flashpoint to attack Okafu partly to settle this grudge.
Within the story, Kazuki’s primary role is as a powerful challenger and a Hero Candidate for the Sixways Exhibition, a tournament to determine the mightiest warrior. She is hired by Haade the Flashpoint to single-handedly lay siege to Okafu to earn that title. Her key relationships are largely transactional or antagonistic. Her relationship with her employer, Haade, is purely business, and after her death, he has no problem offering her place in the tournament to her killer and later uses parts of her corpse to empower another ally. Her most significant relationship is her feud with Morio the Sentinel, another Visitor. Kazuki also had a past connection to the investigation of the True Demon King’s demise, where she worked alongside Hiroto the Paradox, who notes her decision to conceal the truth. In battle, she confronts Shalk the Sound Slicer, a mercenary hired by Okafu to defend the city. Ultimately, despite her formidable abilities, Shalk proves to be her superior in speed, and she falls to a single slash to her throat, unable to continue.
Kazuki the Black Tone possesses a suite of abilities that reflect her otherworldly origin. Her marksmanship is unparalleled, allowing her to snipe distant moving targets with a single bullet, typically aiming for the heart or head. She has mastered the technique of curving her bullets in mid-air, enabling her to strike enemies hiding behind cover. Her control extends to perfectly predicting the trajectory of not only her own bullets but also those fired at her, allowing her to ricochet shots off terrain to hit her target while evading incoming fire. This predictive ability even applies to calculating the momentum of a moving vehicle to crash it into a drawbridge at the precise speed needed to prevent it from closing. Physically, she is superhuman, with the agility to acrobatically leap, scale city walls with ease, and maneuver through the air to dodge attacks. Her physical strength is such that she can kick an empty musket into the path of a bullet to deflect it or jam a musket into an opponent’s skull after landing on them from a great height. She possesses superhuman eyesight, allowing her to identify and shoot pinpoint targets from considerable distances using only iron-sighted muskets. For weapons, she primarily uses multiple muskets, keeping two in her hands and scattering others around the battlefield for rapid-fire reloads. She also carries a small flintlock pistol hidden in her coat as a backup. Tragically, her impressive arsenal and skills ultimately prove insufficient against the even greater speed of Shalk the Sound Slicer.
