Description
Ponta is a tanuki, or raccoon dog, who appears as an original guest character in the 2024 animated film Wonderful Precure! The Movie! Dokidoki♡Game no Sekai de Daibouken!. He belongs to the world of the popular in-universe video game DokiDoki♡Tanukingdom, where he works alongside his partner Pokota. He is a fluffy, large-bodied tanuki with a bright and lively manner, and he has a distinctive way of speaking: he uses the first-person pronoun oira and ends many of his sentences with the sound pon, sometimes adding tanu when he and Pokota speak in unison. The character settings also give him a birthday of March 22 and list udon as his favorite food.
In the story, Ponta is first introduced not as a tanuki but as part of a mysterious tanuki-like egg-shaped object called the Digital Tanu Tamago. This object appears in the real world, slips away before the heroes can deal with it, and later splits into Ponta and Pokota. The two tanuki clash briefly with the main characters before drawing them into the game world, where Komugi and her friends must complete a series of challenges. Within the game, Ponta and Pokota act as hosts and masters of ceremony for these challenges, setting up games and obstacles meant to stop the heroes from reaching their goals, especially preventing Komugi and Yuki from reuniting with their owners Iroha and Mayu.
Ponta's motivation comes from his loyalty to Mujina, the boss of the tanuki in the game world and the figure who holds the secret behind the world of the game. He and Pokota carry out their duties as game characters with enthusiasm rather than genuine hostility, and the film presents them as beloved and endearing figures who are hard to dislike even while they oppose the heroes. Their opposition is part of the game's structure: they make sure the rules are followed, run the various game confrontations, and join the large ranks of tanuki that appear during the bonus stage set by Mujina.
The most important relationship in Ponta's life is his partnership with Pokota. The two act as an inseparable double act, coordinating their movements, speaking in unison, and even playfully imitating the signature poses of other heroes during the final game section, including the dual pose of Cure Bloom and Cure Egret while standing behind the Tanuki Corps. The film emphasizes that there is no rivalry or friction between the two disciples; their friendship is presented as genuine and mutually supportive. Toward the Precure heroes, they maintain a mischievous but good-natured rapport, acting as friendly rivals and guides rather than cruel enemies.
Ponta does not undergo a major personal transformation over the course of the film. Instead, his role develops from that of a mysterious obstacle into that of a charming supporting presence, and the story highlights his loyalty and his bond with Pokota as his defining qualities. His notable abilities are tied to his nature as a game character: he can appear in both the real world and the game world, emerge from the digital tanuki egg form alongside his partner, and oversee and host the game challenges that the heroes must clear. His speech patterns, with their repeated pon and tanu endings, are also a distinctive part of his character and reinforce his identity as a playful tanuki from the game.
