Description
Neko Nekoyamada is a third-year student at Hino Minami High School who serves as the vice-president of the student council. She is a supporting character in My Deer Friend Nokotan and made her first appearance as a non-speaking cameo in the early parts of the story before becoming a recurring presence. Her most distinctive physical features are her very small stature and her bright magenta hair styled into two cone-like shapes that resemble cat ears, which complement her cat-like mannerisms. She also carries a personal step stool to compensate for her height.
Her personality is defined by a combination of intelligence and a quick, easily provoked temper. She is sharp-witted and capable of forming plans, but she is also highly susceptible to flattery—a trait that has earned her the reputation of being an easy-to-handle vice president. She becomes swept up in the energy of others, especially whenever she engages in competition with student council president Torako Koshi. Neko sees herself as Torako’s rival and is determined to prove her superiority in all areas, from academics to social standing. Her primary motivation is to overthrow Torako and to have the Deer Club disbanded, which she views as a threat to the school’s order and to her own prestige. To that end, she constantly searches for Torako’s weaknesses and devises schemes to undermine her, though her efforts invariably end in failure.
Her role in the story is that of an antagonist and comedic foil to the Deer Club, particularly to Torako. She represents a conventional authority figure who is frustrated by the chaotic, deer-themed antics that Torako must manage. Her relationship with Torako is one of rivalry and mutual exasperation; Neko cannot understand why Torako tolerates the Deer Club and sees her as an obstacle to her own ambitions. She also interacts with the other student council members, including the deeply negative secretary Kinu Tanukikouji and the quiet treasurer Chiharu Tsubameya, though these relationships are less developed. With the Deer Club members, particularly Noko Shikanoko, Neko is often bewildered and outmaneuvered by their unpredictable behavior.
Over the course of the series, Neko’s character does not undergo major dramatic development, but she consistently appears as a recurring source of conflict and comedy. Her failures to defeat Torako become a running gag, and her cat-like traits—her desire for praise, her competitive streak, and her tendency to react impulsively—are consistently highlighted. Her notable abilities include a sharp mind for plotting, a quick physical reaction time, and a knack for turning situations to her advantage when she manages to stay calm, though her easily flattered nature often undoes her plans. Overall, Neko Nekoyamada is a energetic and persistent rival whose pride and ambition drive much of the student council versus Deer Club dynamic.
