Description
Memmeln is a character from the original film within the series, A Tale of Perishing, where she is a member of the elite group known as the Nine Soldiers. She is an elf from the Kingdom of Wind who has lived for hundreds of years, a lifespan so extensive that her exact age is unknown. Her long existence has granted her immense magical power, for which she was chosen to be one of the Nine Soldiers, and she is recognized as the most advanced magic-user among her kind.
On the battlefield, Memmeln is calm and composed, rarely displaying any outward emotion. She engages in combat as a rear supporter, using a magical bow and arrow with great skill. Despite her serene and mysterious demeanor, this composure masks a profound and deep-seated exhaustion with life. Having witnessed countless friends and comrades die in wars over the centuries, she has grown weary of her eternal existence and the endless cycle of loss.
This profound fatigue is the core of her motivations. Secretly, Memmeln is the leader of a cult comprised of other disillusioned elves who are also tired of their long lives. Under the guise of choir practice, they work to summon the Ultimate Void, a being they believe will end the world. Memmeln’s plan is to bring about this destruction as a release from her suffering, hoping that obliteration will finally allow her to reunite with the loved ones she has lost. In the original story of A Tale of Perishing, this plot culminates in Memmeln herself transforming into the Ultimate Void, leading to a fatal confrontation where she is killed by her friend and comrade, Luke Braveheart.
Her role in the story changes when Natsuko, who knows the original film's tragic outcome, intervenes. Instead of allowing the violent climax to occur, Natsuko and Luke investigate Memmeln's secret activities, discovering her hidden despair and the death cult. Natsuko chooses to confront Memmeln not with force, but with creation. She uses her ability to bring a character to life, an idol singer named Ultimate Exister from a project Natsuko had worked on, who performs a duet with Memmeln. This encounter provides Memmeln with a new, life-affirming purpose: the joy and passion of being a fan, or oshi-katsu, giving her something to hold onto for eternity. This resolution is a pivotal moment for her, as she abandons her nihilistic quest and chooses to look ahead. Following this change of heart, Memmeln becomes a steadfast ally, fighting alongside her companions and even sacrificing herself in a later battle to save Luke, only to be resurrected.
