Description
Hongniang is the head lady-in-waiting and chief administrator of the Jade Pavilion, serving High Consort Gyokuyou in the imperial rear palace. She is the daughter of a court official and has been in service to Gyokuyou since her mistress first entered the inner court, demonstrating unwavering loyalty from that time onward.

In her thirties, Hongniang is described as a beauty whose worries sometimes show on her face. She has brown eyes and brown hair which she typically ties behind her head. Although approaching middle age, she appears quite young and maintains a slim figure. As a senior lady-in-waiting, she wears fine clothes with matching accessories provided by her mistress.

Hongniang possesses a friendly demeanor and excels at managing people. She can be harsh with those who avoid their duties, but she is generally kind and caring toward her fellow ladies-in-waiting. Her personality combines strict discipline with notable empathy and fairness. While she often finds the unpredictable and rule-bound nature of palace life tiresome, she never forgets to show human consideration to those under her care. She is jaded on the topic of romance, having passed the normal age of marriage, and frequently responds with resignation when others speak of love.

As the head of the Jade Pavilion, Hongniang is noted to be highly capable and competent to a fault. She performs most of the serving duties for Gyokuyou, including cooking, cleaning, childcare, personal finances, and basic medical aid. Her diligence is such that Gyokuyou requires only four attendants to maintain the entire pavilion, a fact that speaks to Hongniang's exceptional managerial skills. She is also cunning in dealing with people; on one occasion, she deliberately made it appear that Maomao had broken an expensive pot, then deducted the cost from the salaries of Maomao's kidnappers while giving Maomao payment that could not be intercepted by them. Her leadership and ability to balance reward and punishment have earned her a reputation as a strict but fair supervisor.

Hongniang's primary motivation is protecting Gyokuyou and ensuring the smooth operation of the Jade Pavilion. She is deeply loyal to her mistress and takes her responsibilities seriously, considering any threat to Gyokuyou a personal matter. During Gyokuyou's first pregnancy, she assisted with the birth of Princess Lingli. When Gyokuyou became pregnant a second time, additional attendants joined under Hongniang's supervision. As Gyokuyou's second pregnancy progressed, Hongniang began to wonder if she might like a husband and children for herself.

Her key relationships include her unwavering bond with Gyokuyou, built on trust and mutual respect. With Maomao, she demonstrates support and emotional intelligence, recognizing the young woman's hidden talents and protecting her from exploitation. In the past, Hongniang experienced romantic feelings for Gaoshun, Jinshi's assistant, but she abandoned this interest upon learning that he was already married with children. She has also been shown to speak ill of individuals only when they truly deserve it, as seen in her reaction to a concubine who was known to be abusive toward servants and potentially involved in poisoning Gyokuyou during her pregnancy.

Her name, Hongniang, literally means red woman and is a reference to a character from the Tang dynasty story Yingying's Biography and the famous play Romance of the Western Chamber. In that play, Hongniang is an intelligent, sympathetic, loyal, and highly enthusiastic maidservant who serves as a matchmaker, causing the two main characters to fall in love and marry. Consequently, her name has become a metaphor for a female matchmaker in Chinese culture.
