Description
Batterygrave Barestar is a secondary antagonist in the anime Übel Blatt, serving as the second of the seven corrupt heroes whom the protagonist Koinzell seeks to destroy. His title, Batterygrave, was originally granted to him when he was given responsibility over the ten defensive batteries of the kingdom. He is a dangerously unhinged and paranoid individual, characterized by his cartoonishly evil and cackling demeanor, which makes him a starkly malevolent figure within the story's darker narrative.
Before becoming one of the celebrated heroes, Barestar was the incompetent son of a successful merchant. He was so terrible at the family business that his father essentially forced him to sign up for the military, leading him to join the fateful mission that would end the life of the hero Ascheriit. His motivations for participating in the betrayal of Ascheriit and his companions were disappointingly banal, boiling down to simple envy and cowardice, as he and the other future heroes feared that Ascheriit's success would make them look bad.
In the present timeline of the story, Barestar has fully abused the privileges of his station. He is a paranoid maniac who has constructed a massive floating castle equipped with a powerful, Death Star-like laser weapon, which he uses to wreak havoc on entire cities, showing no regard for innocent inhabitants, whether they be friend or foe. His paranoia drives him to command his men to search for the "Hero-Killer" Koinzell in the Free City of Jullas-Abllas. He is also secretly plotting to steal the state-of-the-art airship belonging to the chief villain, Marquis Glenn, for himself.
Barestar's key relationship is with his subordinates, who are so aware of his madness and incompetence that they eventually abandon him, fleeing his crumbling flying fortress like rats from a sinking ship and even kicking him away from an escape vehicle. He also has a connection to the knight Elsaria, whose eyes are opened to the depravity of this so-called hero when she witnesses him using weapons of mass destruction against innocents, forcing her to question her allegiance to the seven heroes.
As for his development, the character is presented as a pathetic, sniveling wreck whose background provides zero context for how he became so corrupt. His fate is sealed when his castle is pummeled and destroyed by a laser fired from Elsaria's flagship. In the end, the pathetic Barestar is left pleading for his life before meeting his messy and inevitable execution at the end of Koinzell's blade. In terms of abilities, aside from his authority over the kingdom's defensive batteries, his most notable asset is his technologically advanced flying fortress armed with a massive magical laser cannon.
