Description
Landgrave Schtemwölech is a central antagonist in Übel Blatt, known as one of the legendary Seven Heroes. His original name was Schtemwölech, and before his rise to power, he was a common stonemason who later turned to banditry. He was chosen as one of the Fourteen Lances, a group of elite warriors sent on a perilous mission to defeat the dark nation of Wischtech. During this quest, Schtemwölech became close friends with Ascheriit, the young swordsman who would later return as the protagonist Köinzell. Schtemwölech claimed that Ascheriit's example inspired him to join the mission, as both came from humble beginnings.
After the mission, Schtemwölech was among the seven who betrayed and ambushed Ascheriit and his three loyal companions, massacring them and stealing credit for the victory. Returning to the empire, he was hailed as a hero and granted the title of Landgrave, becoming the lord of the territory of Moran. Over the following two decades, the rewards and adulation he received as a false hero corrupted him deeply. He became consumed by an obsessive desire to preserve his power and status forever.
Driven by an all-consuming lust for eternal life, Schtemwölech delved into forbidden Wischtechian sorcery and medical experimentation. He conducted vile rituals in the depths of his castle altar, capturing hundreds of demihuman women with fairy blood. He drained their blood and minced their flesh in a cruel process intended to halt his own aging. Through these experiments, he successfully infused his body with fairy blood, granting him a physique of unnatural durability, described as being like steel.
In the story, Schtemwölech is the first of the Seven Heroes whom Köinzell confronts. His role is that of a powerful and depraved ruler who embodies the corruption and falsehood at the heart of the heroes' legacy. His key relationships include his former friendship with Ascheriit, which he callously dismisses after realizing the identity of his attacker. He also commands a White Wing Army led by a young man named Pago, and his subordinate Geranpen eventually turns against him after witnessing his atrocities. In his final encounter with Köinzell, Schtemwölech's callous attitude triggers a berserk transformation in his former friend, leading to a brutal defeat where he is beaten and massacred while begging for mercy. His notable abilities include mastery of throwing knives and dual-blade combat, as well as the use of Wischtechian magic artillery such as the powerful cannon known as Dragon's Maw. His enhanced physique, granted by his experiments, makes him a formidable opponent, but his arrogance and desperation ultimately lead to his downfall.
