Description
Rangzatz is a supporting character in the anime Übel Blatt. He is a freelance swordsman and mercenary who operates by a strict personal code: he never accepts a fight he does not believe he can win, and he never does more than what he has been paid to do. This pragmatic, self-interested approach governs most of his behavior, as he evaluates every contract by the level of risk and the size of the reward rather than by loyalty or conviction.

Little is known about his past before he enters the story. He first appears as a hired sword, brought in by Rashev, the commander of the warrior monks, to stand against Köinzell and his companions. After the group defeats a monstrous creature in the underground tunnels beneath the fortress city of Rielde Velem, Rashev and Rangzatz launch an attack. Because Rangzatz demands additional payment before he will press the fight further, Peepi, Wid, and Altea are able to escape, while his attack sends Köinzell plummeting into the ruins below. This encounter establishes him as a capable but commercially minded opponent who prioritizes his own safety and profit over any allegiance.

Rangzatz's most distinctive asset is his magic sword, which has a fairy sealed within it. The weapon uses the imprisoned fairy's scream to cut through its targets, and it is also capable of unleashing shockwaves that destroy everything in their path. His fighting style is described as both powerful and unsettling, making him a dangerous opponent in direct combat.

His motivations are primarily financial. He sells his services to whoever can pay, and he is willing to hold back or break off an engagement when the terms no longer favor him. His involvement in the story is tied to the pursuit of personal gain, and he becomes caught up in several decisive conflicts, where his actions, as well as his connection to Altea, play a notable role in how events unfold.

Later in the story, after the War of Heroes, Rangzatz is hired once again, this time by Glenn after Glenn has returned to life. In this later confrontation he nearly defeats Köinzell, demonstrating just how much stronger he has become since their first meeting. His return as a more formidable fighter shows that his years as a mercenary have continued to hone his combat skills, even though his motives remain rooted in payment and self-interest.
