Description
Hitomi Hino stands as one of the series' main protagonists, a human girl distinguished by her long brown hair. She consistently wears a hairpin on her left side, revealing her left forehead. Her physique draws attention from peers like Jin Mazama, Anne Anetani, and Iena the hyena.

Before the main narrative, Hitomi progressed through the academy's elementary and middle school. During a third-year middle school information session, she encountered Jin Mazama. Believing Jin favored animals, she hesitated to approach directly. Instead, she crafted fake cat ears from gathered animal fur and offered him a tour. When Jin lifted her skirt to check for a tail, she panicked, advising against such actions even for animal lovers. Jin angrily declared his disdain for animals and departed, though Hitomi expressed hope for his return. This incident nearly prompted her transfer to a human school. However, meeting Ranka Ookami and hearing her vision for a multi-species pack inspired Hitomi to enroll in the academy's high school to befriend diverse animals.

As the only other human student besides Jin, Hitomi easily befriends him. She initiates contact during a lunch break, bringing her own homemade meal due to the cafeteria's animal-centric menu. Ranka interrupts, challenging Hitomi for Jin's attention. Assuming a connection between Jin and Ranka, Hitomi withdraws. Later, she reveals her plan to start a Cooking Club to share the joy of cooking, gaining Jin's support. Ranka initially sees Hitomi as a rival but physically welcomes her into the pack with licks following a bear attack.

Hitomi exhibits kindness and empathy, frequently mediating conflicts. She intervenes when Chloe Mashima mistreats Ranka, advising Chloe that friendship isn't built through dominance. Her essential culinary skills cater to her dietary needs and form the foundation of the Cooking Club she founds and leads. The club attracts members including animals like Yukari Komori (koala), Miyubi Shisho (sloth), and later Mei Mei (panda), expanding her interspecies social circle.

Her backstory indicates she never met another human girl before the academy, implying an unknown maternal history. During middle school, she belonged to a swimming club. Throughout the series, her relationships evolve; she maintains genuine care for Jin while developing a close friendship with Ranka despite early tensions. The narrative hints at potential romantic complexity involving attraction to both male and female students.

A future timeline within the story depicts Hitomi as a nurse tending to Jin, reflecting their enduring connection. Her specific career path remains unconfirmed after temporal alterations prevent Jin's original fate. Her character navigates interspecies dynamics, such as helping stabilize Hana the rhinograde's existence through communal efforts and assisting Chii Suimori, a vampire bat avoiding bloodsucking, by providing salty or sour foods to satisfy her needs.
