Description
Anna Scervino is a major character from the fourth film, My Hero Academia: You're Next. She is a young woman of European origin and the heiress to the wealthy Scervino family fortune. Anna has a slim build with waist-length light peach hair and blue eyes. Her typical attire consists of a long-sleeved pink and white dress, complemented by a red bow on her chest and a matching accessory in her hair. A notable physical change occurs upon the activation of her Quirk, as her hair begins to darken from the roots, eventually turning completely black.
Anna is initially portrayed as a frightened and deeply saddened young woman. Her life has been defined by suffering due to her uncontrollable Quirk, Overmodification, which causes her constant pain and painful seizures. She has also been relentlessly pursued by the Gollini Family mafia, who seek to exploit her power. This desperate situation leads her to seek extreme solutions, such as forming a deal with a villain to help her escape her captors, or even begging her butler, Giulio Gandini, to kill her before she loses control of her abilities entirely. This despair is rooted in a traumatic past; the Gollini Family murdered her father and the rest of her family, an event that left her with post-traumatic stress disorder and a strong aversion to violence. However, glimpses of her true personality are revealed in memories of her childhood before this tragedy, where she was brimming with joy and delight, and could be playful and even a little childish, especially in her interactions with Giulio.
Anna's central role in the story is that of a victim and a catalyst. Her unique Quirk is the primary target of the film's main antagonist, Dark Might, the leader of the Gollini Family. He kidnaps her to use her power to amplify his own abilities and those of his subordinates, with the goal of reshaping society in his image. Her capture sets the plot in motion, forcing Giulio to track her to Japan and leading to her eventual rescue by him and the students of U.A. High School's Class 1-A.
The most significant relationship in Anna's life is with her butler, Giulio Gandini. He was hired by her father specifically because his Quirk, Neutralization, could temporarily suppress her own, allowing her to live a relatively normal life and mitigating her painful seizures. Their bond deepens into a profound and loyal partnership. Giulio promises to end her life if her Quirk ever becomes completely uncontrollable, a vow he is prepared to keep out of love and duty. Despite this grim pact, Izuku Midoriya recognizes that Giulio cares for Anna too deeply to truly kill her. Throughout the film, Giulio's primary motivation is to find and save her, and their connection ultimately provides the key to her salvation.
Anna experiences significant development over the course of the film. She begins as a passive victim, trapped by her circumstances and her own power. By the climax, her Quirk reaches a critical state of instability, causing widespread danger. It is in this moment that Giulio, despite being incompatible and suffering great pain, embraces her. This act of connection allows his Quirk to evolve, permanently neutralizing Overmodification and leaving Anna functionally Quirkless. Freed from the source of her torment, she reverts to a more optimistic and joyful version of herself. In the end, she rejects the idea that Giulio is merely her servant, insisting they are now equals and asking him to remain by her side, solidifying their future together.
Anna's notable ability is her Quirk, Overmodification. This power allows her to alter the Quirk of anyone she touches. For the rare individuals who are compatible, she can drastically boost the strength of their existing Quirk or even grant them entirely new abilities. However, those who are incompatible, which constitutes the vast majority of people, are met with sharp, subduing pain upon contact. The Quirk is permanently active, meaning Anna cannot turn it off. This constant activation is the source of her seizures and physical agony. As time passes without proper management, Overmodification becomes increasingly unstable, causing its range and destructive effects to expand. By the time of the film's events, her Quirk has reached a state known as the Quirk Singularity, making it an unparalleled danger to everyone around her. This only ends when Giulio's enhanced Neutralization permanently eradicates her Quirk factor.
