OVA
Description
Gieve is a wandering musician and a self-proclaimed devotee to beauty who plays a significant role as a companion to Prince Arslan. His past before he decided to follow the prince remains a mystery, with no details provided about his origins or early life. He is a wanderer at heart who has a deep-seated refusal to follow nobles, as he believes most of them are greedy tyrants who do not care for their people. His appearance is notable for his deep red-purple hair and navy blue eyes, combined with a tall, slender physique and movements that have been compared to the grace of a snow leopard.
In terms of personality, Gieve is proud, arrogant, and insubordinate, often making wisecracks and dispensing with formalities when it is convenient. He has an avid thirst for freedom and a sharp, ingenious mind. He is a notorious womanizer and a self-proclaimed irresistible poet, a belief that is often supported by the reactions of most women who encounter him. Despite his roguish exterior and initial indifference to matters that do not involve his own well-being, he possesses an innate sense of virtue and a surprising courageousness when he finds a cause worth protecting. He can be merciless to his enemies but also reveals a considerate and selfless side, such as when he threw away his gold to distract enemy soldiers so he could reach Arslan in time.
Gieve's initial motivation for joining Arslan's camp is his infatuation with Farangies, a priestess he views as the embodiment of the goddess Ashi, worthy of endless praise. While he originally sides with the prince as a matter of convenience, he gradually becomes amused by Arslan's naivety and abnormal mannerisms. Over time, this curiosity transforms into genuine sympathy and respect for the prince, as he sees Arslan as a rare light of hope and a different kind of ruler compared to the corrupt nobility he despises. His role in the story expands from a carefree wanderer to a trusted strategist. Later in the series, he is officially appointed as an inspector and eventually becomes one of the sixteen generals specially appointed by Arslan, tasked with gathering intelligence and rooting out threats both inside and outside of Pars.
His key relationships are complex. His persistent and unrequited pursuit of Farangies is a defining trait, and despite her open dislike for him, he remains overprotective of her. He shares a passing rivalry with Kubard over Farangies's attention. He develops a strong camaraderie with other key members of Arslan's group, such as Narsus and Daryun, sharing banter while relying on them in battle. In the Arslan Senki Gaiden OVA titled The Road of Blood and Love, the focus is on Arslan's time with Gieve, during which Gieve recounts intriguing tales about the past romantic relationships of Narsus, Daryun, and Elam. In the second Gaiden OVA, Banquet of Friendship, he is present with the group as they celebrate a victory in Shindra before departing.
Gieve possesses several notable abilities. He is renowned as one of the best archers in Pars, second only to Farangies. In addition to his mastery of the bow, he is a highly skilled swordsman, capable enough to clash with formidable warriors like Hilmes and survive. He is also a gifted player of the oud, using music to disarm audiences and navigate social situations. His combat style relies on speed, agility, and deception, sometimes utilizing unorthodox tactics such as manipulating a weapon with his feet.
