Description
Black Mask, also known as Macht Ewigkeit, is a key antagonist in the second half of Synduality: Noir who later undergoes a significant shift in his role. He is a member of the shadowy organization Ideal, serving as a direct subordinate to the group's mastermind, Weisheit Blaurecht. Known for his serious, stone-faced demeanor, he operates under the alias Black Mask and presents a stark contrast to his more theatrical rival and former colleague, Tokio, who adopts the persona of White Mask.

His background is deeply intertwined with the history of Ideal and the other main characters. Macht, along with Weisheit and Tokio (Licht Alter), was once a close friend and ally, all sharing a common origin connected to the organization. They are all fully aware of Weisheit's ultimate plan, which involves the pursuit of the legendary paradise called Histoire and the subjugation or elimination of Magus, the artificial intelligences that partner with human Drifters. Macht initially aligns himself with this cause, believing in Weisheit's vision and the "great cause" of Ideal, and is eager to step out of Tokio's shadow.

His primary motivation is tied to his loyalty to Weisheit and his belief in the organization's mission. He is dispatched to capture the powerful Magus, Noir and her alter-ego Mystere, as they are considered the key to reaching Histoire. Macht acts as a formidable enforcer for Ideal, piloting his own advanced Cradle Coffin in tandem with his Magus partner, Schnee. His relationship with Schnee is notable for its dynamic; while she is a loyal and capable partner, she often appears concerned or mournful about the path her master is taking, though she initially refrains from voicing direct objections.

Macht’s role in the story evolves significantly over time. He starts as a recurring threat, engaging in multiple battles against the protagonist Kanata and his friends in an attempt to claim Noir. His most critical relationship is his rivalry and friendship with Tokio, who defected from Ideal. Their contrasting philosophies and methods lead to several confrontations, but also a deep-seated understanding between them. As Weisheit's plans become more extreme and he abandons his own forces to pursue his goal, Macht experiences a crisis of faith. When ordered to carry out a final, destructive command, his partner Schnee intervenes, deactivating his cockpit and asking him if this is truly what he wants, an act of defiance that prompts Macht to reconsider his loyalties.

This marks the beginning of his development from a villain into a conflicted anti-hero. Admitted to his former friend that he had once considered leaving Ideal with Schnee, Macht ultimately abandons his allegiance to Weisheit. He joins forces with Tokio and Kanata to stop the madman, piloting his coffin to help them reach the Histoire space station. In the final battle, he and Tokio work together, switching to manual control to combat Weisheit, demonstrating his complete turn against his former master. After the conflict, Macht chooses a new path, becoming a Drifter who travels the world with Schnee, using his skills to rescue others.

As for notable abilities, Macht is a highly skilled Cradle Coffin pilot, capable of going toe-to-toe with the series' best. He is often seen piloting a customized black coffin that matches his masked persona. His effectiveness in combat is greatly enhanced by his partnership with his Magus, Schnee, whose abilities allow him to perform at a high level. While he lacks any supernatural or unique powers outside of his piloting skill and tactical acumen, his experience and determination make him a formidable opponent throughout the series.
