Description
Giselle Gewelle is a Quincy and a member of the Wandenreich`s elite Sternritter, bearing the designation Z, which stands for The Zombie. She is a character whose outward appearance and demeanor stand in stark and deliberate contrast to her true nature, making her one of the most disturbing figures in the final arc of the story.
In terms of appearance, Giselle has a youthful and somewhat delicate look. She has large blue eyes and long, black hair that reaches her lower back, with two distinct strands sticking up from the top of her head. She wears a variation of the standard white Sternritter trench coat, complemented by black leggings and white shoes. A small white cap with a black peak and the Wandenreich insignia is perched on the side of her head, adding to her seemingly casual and innocent image.
Her personality is a study in contradictions. In almost any situation, including dangerous battles, she maintains a cheerful, goofy, or vacant smile. This expression often leads opponents to underestimate her. However, this lighthearted facade masks a deeply cruel and manipulative psyche. She is known to use reverse psychology, playfully begging her enemies to spare her or not attack her, specifically to provoke them into doing so, thereby triggering her own deadly abilities. Despite forcing her victims to commit suicide or turning her own fallen comrades into reanimated weapons, she claims not to be a sadist, a statement that itself highlights her skewed perception of morality. She has no qualms about using the corpses of her friends as tools for combat, viewing them as resources rather than people. Giselle has a notably antagonistic relationship with her fellow Sternritter Candice Catnipp, whom she frequently mocks, though she is still willing to fight alongside her when necessary. She is also known for her ability to provoke others, including the zombie of Bambietta Basterbine, whom she physically strikes and controls.
Giselle`s background is largely tied to her recent ascension within the Wandenreich. She is a newer member of the Sternritter and part of a group of female Quincies that includes Bambietta Basterbine, Liltotto Lamperd, Candice Catnipp, and Meninas McAllon, a group sometimes referred to informally by fans. Her role in the story unfolds during the second invasion of the Seireitei. After Bambietta is defeated by Captain Sajin Komamura, Giselle approaches her fallen comrade. While her companions discuss retrieving Bambietta, Giselle instead kills her. She then uses her power to reanimate Bambietta as a zombie, a puppet she wields against the Shinigami. Throughout the ensuing battles, she is seen confronting several heroes, including Kenpachi Zaraki and Ichigo Kurosaki, though she is often outmatched by their power. Her most significant confrontation is with Captain Mayuri Kurotsuchi, a scientist whose analytical mind and preparation directly counter her abilities, leading to her losing control of many of her zombies. Even after being stabbed through the heart, she survives by fleeing to drink the blood of her own zombie, Bambietta, to regenerate.
One of the most notable aspects of Giselles character is her key relationship with Bambietta. Giselles obsession with her is a chilling example of her possessive and necrophilic tendencies. She expresses excitement and arousal from the act of killing Bambietta and takes great pleasure in owning and controlling her corpse, repeatedly telling the helpless zombie that she is cute and that she loves her even as she beats her for being too demanding. Her other significant relationship is with Liltotto Lamperd. Unlike her connection with Bambietta, this seems to be a genuine partnership, with Liltotto often acting as the more pragmatic and level-headed companion who looks out for Giselle, even saving her from Yhwach`s Auswählen.
In terms of development, Giselle remains a consistently antagonistic force who is never redeemed or shown a softer side. Her primary arc involves the unleashing and eventual loss of her army of zombies, forcing her to rely on her own resilience. She survives the final battles, a testament to her tenacity, and appears in later light novels, still accompanied by the zombified Bambietta, indicating she has faced no real consequences for her actions.
Giselles abilities are almost entirely derived from her Schrift, The Zombie. This power is activated by her blood. Any living being that comes into contact with her blood can be turned into a zombie under her complete control. The mechanics of this ability have several key nuances. For Shinigami, even a small splash of blood is often enough to take control, and if they are turned while still alive, they retain their full combat abilities but lose all free will. For fellow Quincies, the process is more difficult; they must be dead before Giselles blood can reanimate them as zombies, which results in a more powerful but still subservient puppet. The amount of blood required also depends on the spiritual power of the target; weaker enemies need only a few drops, but powerful captains require a large amount to be spread throughout their body. She can also use her blood to heal injuries, both on herself and on her zombies, by transplanting limbs or other body parts from one corpse to another. Giselle herself possesses a remarkable level of immortality, capable of surviving devastating wounds like being stabbed through the heart. However, her regeneration consumes her own blood, and if her reserves run low, she must replenish them by consuming the flesh and blood of her zombies. She also has access to the Quincy`s Vollständig, a final form which, in her case, grants her skeletal, bone-like wings and a tail, although she claims to dislike using it as it is too tiring.
