Description
Jaralis is a lion-type demi-human and a prominent political figure in the nation of Siltvelt, appearing as an antagonist in the fourth season of the anime. As the representative of the Lion species, one of the major ruling powers in Siltvelt, he stands in political opposition to his rival, Valnar. His commanding presence is emphasized by his thick, regal mane and sharp, calculating eyes, which frame a face that can shift from courteous formality to ruthless condescension.
On the surface, Jaralis often presents himself with a veneer of politeness and civility. However, this outward composure masks a deeply ambitious, cunning, and malicious personality. He is driven by a fierce hunger for power and a desire to rule Siltvelt, viewing anyone who stands in his way as an obstacle to be eliminated. This includes the Shield Hero, Naofumi Iwatani, whom Jaralis sees not as a revered figure, but as an unworthy intruder and a pawn to be controlled for his own political gain. He is a manipulative schemer who prefers to operate through elaborate, indirect means, yet tends to resort to force and dirty tricks when his plans are threatened.
In the story, Jaralis's primary role is as a political antagonist within Siltvelt, attempting to seize control of the nation and manipulate the Shield Hero for his own ascension. He holds a deep-seated resentment toward outsiders and plots to undermine Naofumi through treachery, including attempts at framing him for scandals and poisoning his meals. His personal history is stained by a past betrayal: during a war with Melromarc, he colluded with the enemy and killed a charismatic and successful comrade. This comrade was Tyran's son, the father of the Hakuko siblings Atla and Fohl. After murdering their father, Jaralis further cemented his villainy by ensuring the orphaned siblings were sold into slavery. This act establishes him as the sworn enemy of Atla and Fohl and the central target of their quest for vengeance.
Key relationships are defined by his conflicts. With Naofumi Iwatani, Jaralis is condescending and treacherous, treating the hero as a tool to be used or disposed of and demanding the Shield Hero produce heirs for Siltvelt's tribes. His relationship with Atla and Fohl is one of mutual hatred, stemming directly from his assassination of their father and their subsequent enslavement. This conflict comes to a head when Jaralis, cornered by the siblings, abandons all pretense of civility.
Jaralis undergoes a monstrous physical development when his schemes are foiled. Though a capable combatant with magic such as the Zweite Accel Boost spell to increase his speed, he relies on desperation and external aid when outmatched. Provided with a mysterious transformation drug by an unknown faction, he resorts to swallowing a potion that transforms him into a powerful and feral therianthrope. In this desperate state, he further abandons his humanity by consuming his own companions, becoming a grotesque chimera of flesh. His notable abilities in this form include an unnamed necromantic howl that can reanimate incapacitated allies as zombie-like thralls. Despite this overwhelming power, he is ultimately defeated by the combined efforts of Atla and Fohl, who have undergone their own empowering transformations, ending his reign of terror.
