Description
Aultcray Melromarc XXXII, originally born as Lüge Lansarz Faubrey, is the former King Consort of the Kingdom of Melromarc and a central figure whose actions drive much of the early conflict in the story. He is an older man with long, grey hair that reaches his shoulders and a prominent beard. During his reign, he dressed in royal purple robes adorned with white fur and a golden crown, projecting an image of regal authority. However, after being stripped of his position, his appearance becomes disheveled, often wearing only grey trousers and a cloak, with a visible loss of spirit in his eyes. Later, after finding a measure of redemption, he regains his composure, though he adopts a much more humble demeanor than in his youth.
In his younger days, Aultcray was known throughout the world as the Wise King of Wisdom, a title earned through formidable intelligence, tactical brilliance, and heroic deeds. He was respected by both allies and enemies for his strategic mind, and his presence alone was said to cause confusion among enemy forces. He was active and heroic, building a great reputation among the world's kingdoms. His wife, Queen Mirellia, and even the slave trader of Melromarc acknowledge that the kingdom owed much of its standing among nations to his efforts. However, the man who persecuted the Shield Hero is a far cry from this legendary figure. By the time of the story's main events, Aultcray's judgment has been severely clouded by personal tragedy and manipulation. He is deeply prejudiced against demi-humans, particularly the Hakuko (White Tiger) race, because they killed his parents and are rumored to have murdered his sister. This hatred extends to the Shield Hero, whom the demi-human nation of Siltvelt worships as a god. As a result, he directs an irrational and relentless campaign of oppression against Naofumi Iwatani, the newly summoned Shield Hero.
His motivations are rooted in a painful past. After the murder of his parents and many close to him by the Hakuko, his homeland of Faubrey refused to retaliate for political reasons, leading him to renounce his claim to its throne. He moved to Melromarc with his sister Lucia, a kingdom known for its discrimination against demi-humans, seeking a place where he could act on his hatred. He rose through the ranks of the Melromarc military, impressing Mirellia with his skill and strength, and eventually married her. He earned his title of Wise King after challenging and killing the supreme Hakuko leader, Tyran Ga Fayon, achieving his vengeance. However, the loss of his sister and later his son, Shizel, who was poisoned by Siltvelt guests, only deepened his obsession with protecting his remaining family, a trait that was cruelly exploited. He doted excessively on his eldest daughter, Malty, turning a blind eye to her cruel and arrogant tendencies, which she used to manipulate him into further persecuting the Shield Hero.
Aultcray's role in the story is initially that of an antagonist and the primary source of institutional opposition to Naofumi. Abusing the political power left in his care while the Queen was away, he supports the Church of the Three Heroes in demonizing the Shield Hero. He orchestrates a false rape accusation against Naofumi, confiscates his belongings, restricts his access to leveling opportunities, and rigs a duel to have Naofumi's companion, Raphtalia, taken from him. His actions are so egregious that they nearly trigger international conflicts, as summoning all four Cardinal Heroes to one nation violated established treaties. Upon Queen Mirellia's return, his crimes are exposed. As punishment for his discrimination and abuse of power, he is stripped of his royal authority and his name is legally changed to the humiliating moniker Trash.
Key relationships define his arc. His relationship with Naofumi evolves from irrational hatred to a reconciled alliance. While he initially addresses the other heroes with respect, he refers to Naofumi as a criminal or simply the shield. After his punishment, he avoids Naofumi until encountering Atla, a young Hakuko girl in Naofumi's party who bears a striking resemblance to his late sister. This encounter shocks him and begins his redemption. Following the death of his wife, Mirellia, at the hands of an ally of Malty, Aultcray falls into despair but is reawakened to his senses by Naofumi, after which he amends his relationship with the hero. His relationship with his wife, Mirellia, is one of genuine love, though his foolish actions cause her to frequently and publicly reprimand him. He spoils his eldest daughter, Malty, whose manipulation is largely responsible for his persecution of Naofumi. Upon witnessing Malty's pleasure at her mother's death, he finally sees her for the monster she is and, though it causes him great pain, orders her execution. He also shows paternal love for his second daughter, Melty, who still cares for him despite his actions.
In terms of development, Aultcray undergoes a significant transformation. He begins as a once-great hero whose wisdom was corrupted by grief and prejudice, making him a petty and vindictive king. After his public humiliation and renaming to Trash, he becomes a broken and listless figure, refusing to fight during the Spirit Tortoise crisis. His true redemption arc begins when he sees Atla and later when, spurred by Naofumi after Mirellia's death, he reclaims his former purpose. He sheds his prejudice, accepts his past name of Trash as a form of penance, and once again demonstrates the tactical genius of the Wise King, becoming a trusted advisor to the throne and an ally to Naofumi.
Aultcray possesses notable abilities as the wielder of the Vassal Staff, one of the Seven Star Heroes. In his prime, he was an incredible fighter and tactician, and the Staff responded to his strength. However, during his period of decline, the Staff deemed him unworthy and ceased to respond to him. After his redemption, he regains its use. The Vassal Staff specializes in enhancing the user's magic, and as its wielder, Aultcray can use a wide array of spells. His known abilities include Magic Prism, which fires a prism that can create multiple copies of magical attacks; Float Mirror, a defensive spell; and large-scale offensive magic such as the High-Class Group Spell Ice Meteor. However, his greatest ability is his strategic genius, using terrain and minimal intelligence to turn the tide of battles and achieve decisive victories.
