Description
Hakkon, often called Boxxo, is the protagonist of his story, a man who met an unusual end and found himself reborn in a fantasy world as a sentient vending machine. In his previous life, he was a Japanese man with an extraordinary passion for vending machines, spending much of his salary on exploring and collecting them. His death occurred during a traffic accident when he saw a vending machine fall from a truck. Rather than jump to safety, he attempted to save the machine, and was crushed by it in the process. Upon reincarnation, he awoke beside a lake in a dangerous labyrinth, still fully conscious but now inhabiting the body of a red-and-white beverage vending machine, which serves as his default form.
Boxxo's fundamental nature is defined by his complete lack of mobility and severely limited speech. He cannot take a single step on his own and is entirely dependent on others to carry him from place to place. His communication is restricted to a small set of pre-recorded vending machine phrases, such as "Welcome" as an affirmative and "Too bad" as a negative, though he later learns to splice these recordings together to form more complex sentences. Despite these immense physical limitations, his personality remains warm, thoughtful, and deeply benevolent. He is intensely loyal and protective of his friends, demonstrating a consistent willingness to put himself in harm's way to ensure their safety. This self-sacrificing impulse, a carryover from the human who died saving a machine, often leads him to act recklessly, which frequently worries and frustrates his companions. He is also highly resourceful and inventive, using his extensive knowledge of modern vending machines and their products to devise clever solutions to the many problems he encounters in this new, primitive world.
His role in the story is primarily that of a logistical and strategic genius rather than a frontline fighter. Since he cannot engage in combat directly, Boxxo serves as an indispensable support unit for his group. He provides a steady supply of food, drinks, and other goods that are considered miraculous in a world without modern convenience, such as instant noodles, canned coffee, and even ice. In the heat of battle, he uses his products in inventive ways, such as creating explosive reactions with cola and mint candies or using a vending machine's barrier skill to protect his allies from harm. His ability to generate anything from hot meals to emergency oxygen makes him the party's "food and supplies担当" (person in charge) and an invaluable asset on any expedition.
The most significant relationship in Boxxo's new existence is with a young huntress named Lammis. She is the first person to find him after his reincarnation and, in a moment of desperation for food, purchases a item from him. In gratitude and companionship, she names him Boxxo, a play on the Japanese word for "box," and decides to carry him on her back using a large frame. Lammis possesses the Blessing of Might, granting her superhuman strength that is actually difficult to control. Carrying Boxxo, who weighs several hundred kilograms, acts as a stabilizer, allowing her to fight with precision. Their bond is incredibly strong; Boxxo harbors deep feelings for her that he cannot express, and she becomes fiercely devoted to him, refusing to leave him behind under any circumstances. He also forms important connections with other characters, such as the skilled magic item maker Hulemy, who is one of the few individuals who understands that he is more than just a magical artifact, and the various hunters and villagers who come to rely on his unique services.
Throughout his journey, Boxxo undergoes significant personal development, particularly concerning his identity. In the beginning, he desperately wishes to find a way to break the curse of his form and return to being a human. However, as he continues to live as a vending machine, experiencing new adventures and forming deep bonds with his companions, this desire begins to fade. He starts to recognize the value and unique advantages of his mechanical body, realizing that he can help people in ways he never could as a human. He gradually accepts his new life, finding purpose and even contentment in his role. This internal shift is highlighted when the possibility of regaining his humanity presents itself; while Lammis strongly wishes for it, Boxxo himself becomes increasingly ambivalent and reluctant to change back.
Boxxo's notable abilities are intrinsically tied to his vending machine mechanics. He operates on a point system, where every coin inserted into him is converted into "points." He needs these points to maintain his magical functions, replenish his internal stock of products, and repair any damage he sustains. If his points reach zero, he ceases to function entirely. Using accumulated points, he can transform into different types of vending machines, from ice cream dispensers and instant noodle makers to jukeboxes and gas pumps, though he can only maintain these alternate forms for a limited time each day. He can also use points to unlock new skills, the first and most crucial of which is a protective barrier that shields him from attacks. Despite being a machine, he retains his human senses, able to feel pain, heat, and cold, and his internal lights dim or flicker when he is sleeping or deep in thought.
