Description
Itsuki Mitsutagawa is a second-year student at Shadowverse Battle College and serves as the leader of the Seventh Flame club. He finds himself in this leadership position by default after a conflict with the rival club First Reaper caused all other members to resign, leaving the club on the verge of being shut down. While desperately distributing recruitment flyers in an effort to rebuild, Itsuki encounters Light Tenryu. Light, along with Subaru Makabe, joins Seventh Flame, which provides the initial spark needed to rescue the club from closure.
Physically, Itsuki stands 156 centimeters tall and has a slim build. He has distinctive multicolored pink hair styled with two twin ahoge, blue eyes, and is often seen wearing hoodies. His gentle and kind-hearted demeanor is immediately apparent to those around him, and he consistently projects compassion and empathy toward others.
A core aspect of Itsuki's personality stems from his lifelong love of flowers, nature, and cute aesthetics. During his childhood, this preference led to isolation from his peers, who frequently misgendered him or rejected his interests. For a time, Itsuki believed he needed to change who he was to fit in. However, playing Shadowverse gave him a means of self-expression and helped him find the confidence to accept his authentic self as a source of strength rather than weakness. This journey of self-acceptance is central to his character, reflected in every aspect of his identity as a player.
Itsuki's motivations are driven by a desire to protect and nurture his found family within Seventh Flame. He is deeply committed to the club's survival and the well-being of its members. This is demonstrated powerfully when he confronts Tatsumi Raido, who challenges Seventh Flame for offering membership to Ren Kazamatsuri. Recognizing the similarity between Ren's situation and his own past experiences of being rejected for being different, Itsuki decides to fight for her place in the club. Despite Tatsumi's criticism that his gentle nature made him weak and responsible for Seventh Flame's decline, Itsuki prevails in their duel by affirming his decision to remain true to himself. This victory secures Ren's admission to the club and cements his resolve.
Throughout the story, Itsuki forms several significant relationships. He shares a particularly strong bond with Ren Kazamatsuri, grounded in their shared experiences of non-acceptance. His rivalry with Ryoga Jasei, the wielder of the DigiFriend Demonium, is another key relationship. After losing their initial match due to opposing views on the value of DigiFriends, Itsuki studies Ryoga's Bloodcraft tactics and triumphs in a Shadowverse Club Tournament rematch by empowering his key follower Cosmos Fang with the spell Feral Awakening. This victory earns him Ryoga's respect. Itsuki's friendships with Light Tenryu and Subaru Makabe, the other two founding members of the reformed Seventh Flame, are also central, as they support each other through countless battles and personal challenges. He also faces Luca Yonazuki, a member of the elite Seven Shadows, losing to him twice. In their second battle, Itsuki forces Luca to fight seriously for the first time, which validates Itsuki's growth and earns Luca's acknowledgment.
His development is marked by a continuous struggle to prove that his gentle nature and unique perspective are not weaknesses but unique forms of power. This is encapsulated in his own words: I don't have a lot of strength, but there's more than one type of power. Being who I am, and going forward, that's my strength. His conviction is tested repeatedly, from defending the club against rivals to fighting in life-threatening battles. During the conflict against the Arc Ruler and the invading Shades, Itsuki and Subaru are tasked with deactivating the Gaia Tower. They face the enemy Erde in a two-versus-one battle where damage inflicts physical harm. Near defeat, their DigiFriends, Slade and Baccherus, shield them from a fatal attack. This act of sacrifice renews Itsuki and Subaru's determination, causing their partners to evolve into more powerful forms, Slade, Blossoming Storm and Baccherus, Grand Ghostie, allowing them to win. After the final victory, Itsuki demonstrates his selfless nature by accepting the Arc Ruler's offer to erase the public's memory of their heroism, insisting that only the members of Seventh Flame need to remember what they accomplished together.
In terms of battling ability, Itsuki is a skilled user of the Forestcraft class. His strategy revolves around returning cards from the field to their owners' hands, a technique that activates powerful combo effects. His key followers include Slade, Blossoming Wolf and Cosmos Fang, and he uses spells like Feral Awakening to enable potent, one-turn-knockout finishing moves. His deck is filled with floral and nature motifs, serving as a direct expression of his personality. However, this approach has a notable weakness: it struggles against boards filled with large followers, as his removal options are often situational or expensive. Despite this vulnerability, Itsuki's bond with his DigiFriend, Slade, is exceptionally strong. This connection allows Slade to evolve into Slade, Blossoming Storm during critical moments, reflecting the depth of trust between them.
