Description
Kyoka Jiro is a student in Class 1‑A at U.A. High School training to become a professional hero under the name Hearing Hero: Earphone Jack. She was born to musical parents: her father Kyotoku is a composer and her mother Mika is a musician, and she inherited her mother’s mutant‑type Quirk, Earphone Jack. Growing up surrounded by music she learned to play guitar, bass, drums and keyboard, yet she chose to pursue heroism rather than a musical career, a decision her parents fully supported even as she initially felt guilty for not following their path.
Physically Jiro is petite and slender with a distinct punk‑inspired look. Her dark purple hair is cut into an asymmetrical chin‑length bob with a heartbeat‑monitor line accent on the fringe, and her prominent earlobes are elongated, cable‑like appendages ending in 3.5 mm plugs. She typically wears a black leather jacket over a distressed pink shirt, black pants, a choker and boots with built‑in stereo speakers, later adding wrist‑mounted amplifiers to her hero costume. Two small red triangular marks sit beneath her eyes, evoking amplifier knobs.
Her personality is a blend of cool detachment and deep loyalty. Jiro is pragmatic, blunt and often unenthusiastic, especially toward those she finds irritating. She readily dispenses snarky remarks, frequently targeting Denki Kaminari for his cluelessness and Minoru Mineta for his perverted behaviour, using her earphone jacks to jab or shock them when provoked. Beneath that tough exterior, however, she is extraordinarily kind and protective of her friends. She values her classmates’ wellbeing above her own, a trait crystallised in her fury against All For One when he made her friends cry. Despite her confident stage presence as a rock musician, she harbours insecurities about her physical appearance and, earlier in her journey, regarded her love of music as an “un‑heroic” hobby.
Jiro’s motivation is straightforward: she wants to save people and dedicate her life to heroism. Over time she comes to realise that her musical passion is not a hindrance but a unique strength that can uplift and heal others. Her development reaches a turning point during the U.A. School Festival, where she leads Class 1‑A’s band as vocalist and instrumentalist, composing music and teaching her peers their parts. That performance allows her to merge her two identities, proving to herself that music is another way to be a hero.
Key relationships define much of her growth. She shares a close, supportive friendship with Momo Yaoyorozu, and the two often combine their Quirks — Jiro amplifies her sound through stereos Momo creates — to devastating effect. Her dynamic with Denki Kaminari is a blend of teasing exasperation and genuine fondness; she mocks his antics but also works seamlessly alongside him in combat, such as during the USJ attack when they electrocuted villains together. With Minoru Mineta she acts as a no‑nonsense disciplinarian, while with the rest of her class she transitions from reserved observer to trusted, passionate ally.
Her Quirk, Earphone Jack, grants her extendable earlobes that function as prehensile cables, capable of reaching up to six metres and piercing hard surfaces. By plugging into walls, floors or the ground, she can detect vibrations to scout enemy numbers, positions and movements with pinpoint accuracy, making her an exceptional reconnaissance asset. Offensively, she channels the sound of her heartbeat through her jacks to generate powerful, ground‑rupturing shockwaves that can disrupt formations and stagger opponents. She can also wield her earlobes as whips in close combat and, with her support gear, project concussive sound blasts from her boots. She has learned to counter opposing sound attacks by plugging her jacks into her legs to neutralise incoming frequencies. Though her physical strength is average and she is vulnerable to deafening noise, her tactical intellect — she ranks seventh academically in her class — and her versatile support kit allow her to fill a flexible mid‑range combat and information‑gathering role.
Within the broader story Jiro participates in critical moments from the USJ incident to the final war, always proving herself a calm, reliable presence who rises to meet escalating threats. Her leadership of the cultural festival band and her defiant stand against overwhelming enemies illustrate a character who transforms self‑doubt into resolve, embodying the idea that doing what one loves and protecting those who matter can be one and the same.
