Description
Arcana is a central figure in the second season of The Misfit of Demon King Academy, introduced as a Selection God from the Underground World known as Giordal. Her most defining characteristic is that she has forgotten her true divine name, which has a profound impact on her identity and purpose. Before becoming a Selection God, she was known as Genedonov, the Goddess of Absurdity. This loss of memory is a pivotal aspect of her existence, as gods typically lack souls and are defined by their order and name. In exchange for her lost memories, Arcana gained something unusual for a god: a heart, allowing her to experience emotions and compassion in ways that traditional gods like Nosgalia do not.
In terms of appearance, Arcana is depicted as a beautiful young girl with silky white hair and golden eyes, which gives her a composed and ethereal presence. Her personality initially comes across as stoic and expressionless, which aligns with her role as a divine figure. However, this facade masks a deep internal struggle. Having gained a heart, she is not indifferent to the suffering of mortals. Her worldview was severely damaged by a past ordeal involving a grieving father who sought revenge through the Judgement Selection. Her attempt to save the father by creating a replica of his deceased daughter led to tragedy when the truth was revealed, causing the man to commit suicide. This event left Arcana questioning whether it was possible to save everyone, leading her to wander in a state of despair, akin to suffering from a parched thirst in an endless desert without hope.
Arcana's primary motivation throughout the story evolves from passive despair to active atonement. Initially serving Cardinal Ahide, she is bound by her duty as a Selection God. She wields the Sword of the Almighty, Leviangilma, which she helps create by fusing the magic swords Gneodoros and Evansmana with the Moon of Creation, Artieltnoah. Her role changes dramatically after her defeat by Anos Voldigoad. He provides her with an answer to her existential question about the nature of salvation, proving that the gods are not almighty and that she should not be paralyzed by the fear of making mistakes. Anos refuses to kill her and instead asks her to become his Selection God, tasking her with dismantling the Judgement Selection that causes so much tragedy. She accepts this as her path to atonement.
Her relationship with Anos Voldigoad is the most significant in her development. It is revealed that their connection predates her time as a god. Anos experiences dreams of a past life where he lived with a young girl named Arcana, who he protected as his only family. In that life, Arcana was a Dragon Core, a being reincarnated from a dragon's womb, which made her a target for dragons. Anos's wish to protect her led to her reincarnation, though she lost her memories of him in the process. This shared history creates a deep bond, as Anos continually seeks to help her recover her memories and supports her resolve to change. Another key relationship is her recognition of the fusion of Sasha and Misha Necron, whom Anos names Aisha. Arcana theorizes that Aisha is the reincarnation of her former self, Genedonov, who antagonized the gods and reincarnated as a demon to serve the Demon King of Tyranny.
Throughout the story, Arcana undergoes significant development. She transitions from a god tormented by guilt and the limitations of her power, who allowed herself to be used by Ahide, to an individual who actively chooses her own path. She defies Ahide, nulls their pact, and pledges her service to Anos to end the Judgement Selection. Her development is also tied to her memories, as she struggles with the fear that recovering her past self might cause her present self to disappear. Ultimately, she finds peace and a new resolve, allowing her to assist Anos and his classmates directly, such as when she uses the Moon of Creation to open a path to the Underground World and create snow dragons for transport.
As a Selection God, Arcana possesses a range of formidable abilities tied to order and creation. She can summon and control the Moon of Creation, Artieltnoah, using it to freeze the land and intensify lunar snowdrops. She is instrumental in the creation of Leviangilma, the Sword of the Almighty, a divine weapon that makes its wielder invulnerable to destruction. Her authority as a Selection God allows her to act as a proxy for divine order, and she can lend her magic to others, such as when she empowered Aisha to use her Demonic Eyes to rewrite divine order. She also possesses the ability to enter dreams and use the powers of other gods, such as the Guardian God of Dreams, to help recover lost memories, often requiring direct contact to increase the effectiveness of the order.
