Description
In the Kinnikuman: Perfect Origin Arc, the character known as the Grim Reaper is a complex figure whose true identity is eventually revealed to be Psychoman, a member of the ancient and elite Perfect Origin faction. He is initially introduced as part of the second wave of the Perfect Large Numbers, a group of Perfect Chojin who do not recognize the peace treaty signed between the Justice, Devil, and Perfect Chojin factions. The Grim Reaper’s appearance is marked by a distinctive cloak and a skeletal motif, reflecting his ominous name and persona.
Behind the Grim Reaper disguise, Psychoman is an incredibly old being, one of the ten Perfect Origin chosen by the Chojin Enma to survive an ancient annihilation of the Chojin race. For eons, he and his peers hid away, honing their skills to absolute perfection. His personality is defined by a profound arrogance and a sense of intellectual superiority. He is calculating, composed, and often speaks with a mocking, fey tone, looking down on all Justice and Devil Chojin as inferior beings. Unlike some Perfect Chojin who are simply detached, the Grim Reaper displays a cruelty that extends to enjoying the fear and suffering of those he deems weak, once mocking the sight of "inferior humans scurrying like mice".
His primary motivation is rooted in his loyalty to the Perfect Origin and its mysterious leader, The Man, whose trusted agent he becomes. However, his personal obsession is with Magnet Power, a force he discovered deep within the Earth. He is a firm believer in this power as the ultimate path to strength and has dedicated himself to its research, even creating a laboratory in Barcelona's Sagrada Família to study it. He once taught Magnet Power to Neptune King, though he considered his student a failure due to his arrogance. This devotion puts him at odds with other Perfect Origin members, such as his friend Silverman, who wished to seal Magnet Power away, believing it would corrupt them.
In the narrative of the Perfect Origin Arc, the Grim Reaper serves as a major antagonist. He acts as a guide for the Perfect Large Numbers, revealing the location of the second stage of their tournament at the Saqqara Pyramid, which has been relocated to Japan. His role in the story culminates in a brutal tag-team match against the Devil Chojin team of Buffaloman and Springman, alongside his partner Turboman. The Grim Reaper fights with a ruthless and tactical style, utilizing his Skeleton Body to avoid attacks and weapons like the Buzzsaw Hat. Demonstrating a chilling lack of camaraderie, after Turboman is killed in the match, the Grim Reaper coldly rips open his back to steal his Earth Unit, a device for storing energy, and kicks his partner's corpse from the ring.
His key relationship within the Perfect Origin is with Silverman, who considers Psychoman his best friend. While Psychoman admits to a deep respect and admiration for Silverman, seeing him as a hero, he mocks the concept of friendship, finding it alien to Perfect Chojin. This contradiction highlights his internal conflict; he keeps Silverman's room exactly as it was after he left the group, yet claims to feel nothing but respect rather than affection. His ultimate goal is to earn the validation of The Man and the other Perfect Origin members, whose respect he deeply craves despite often viewing them as brutes.
The Grim Reaper experiences notable development through his defeat. After being defeated by Buffaloman, rather than simply accept death, he engineers a strategic outcome. He rises and openly provokes Buffaloman into killing him, knowing this act would sever Buffaloman's ties with the Justice Chojin and force him to remain a Devil Chojin. However, this apparent death is a deception. Using his intangibility, he teleports away to his lab, faking his demise to escape and continue his existence. This act reveals a self-preservation instinct, yet paradoxically, when forced to choose a member of the Perfect Origin to sacrifice to a deadly device, he ultimately chooses himself, unable to bear the thought of sacrificing any other.
His notable abilities are diverse and formidable. As the Grim Reaper, he demonstrates physical techniques such as the Ignition Dress, Thunder Sabre, and his powerful solo-maneuver, the Phantom Canon, which is a variation of the John Does Arrows. He also possesses a unique Skeleton Body that allows him to contort and avoid attacks. His true power, however, lies in his mastery of Magnet Power, which allows him to control magnetism in creative ways for both attack and defense. Combined with his immense age, experience, and a cunning, tactical mind, the Grim Reaper stands as one of the most dangerous and deceptive antagonists in the Perfect Origin Arc.
