Description
Charles Jones serves as the General Manager at Young Technologies, a position that places him in a position of significant authority within the company. His background is marked by a move from Wales to America, a relocation he undertook to start a new life after his marriage ended painfully. He had been married to his high school sweetheart, Gweneth, but the relationship concluded when he discovered her infidelity with a personal friend. This betrayal left a deep emotional scar, and he keeps his old wedding ring on a chain as a reminder, having avoided serious romantic commitment ever since.
In terms of personality, Charles initially presents as a blunt, cold, and calculating individual whose primary focus appears to be the success and betterment of Young Technologies. He maintains a professional, relaxed, and controlled attitude in the workplace, rarely expressing overt emotion. Despite this aloof exterior, he is a deeply caring person. However, his method of helping others often involves manipulation, though he directs this trait toward achieving outcomes that are genuinely in the best interest of the person he is influencing. He is known to be honest, sometimes to a fault, and puts up an emotional front to prevent himself from becoming too attached to others.
The primary motivation driving Charles in the story is his sense of responsibility for Sam Young, his assistant and the daughter of the company's CEO. Initially, his interest in Sam was professional, as he felt it was his duty to mold her into a suitable future CEO. When Sam confided that she did not want to take over the company, his motivation shifted. He decided instead to focus on building her confidence and helping her become independent, again using his preferred method of subtle manipulation to achieve this goal. His role in the story is that of a mentor and a key figure in Sam's personal and professional development, pushing her out of her comfort zone to help her overcome her insecurities.
Key relationships define much of his character arc. His most significant relationship is with Sam Young, whom he has taken to calling Bunty as a term of affection. Through his interactions with her, his guarded and frozen heart begins to thaw, and he starts displaying signs of romantic attraction. His relationship with his boss, Samuel A. Young, is more tenuous, as the CEO is not a huge fan of Charles but trusts him with both the company and his daughter. Another notable relationship is with Eva Lawson, a previous lover. Charles ended their physical relationship when Eva broke their agreed-upon rule not to become attached, and she has since developed an obsession with him, frequently causing him trouble. He was once married to Gweneth, whose betrayal is the root cause of his aversion to emotional attachment.
Throughout the series, Charles shows significant development. He moves from a purely professional interest in Sam as a potential CEO to a more personal investment in her well-being and growth as an individual. His rigid, cold demeanor slowly melts as his connection with Sam deepens, forcing him to confront the emotional walls he built after his divorce.
Notable abilities include his skill as an amazing fencer, though he typically does not fence to his full potential when facing opponents. He is also a very perceptive and calculating individual, skilled at reading people and manipulating situations to achieve his desired ends, all while maintaining a calm and controlled exterior. He was also known to occasionally exclaim in Welsh when surprised or scared, a habit he eventually discontinued after feeling it sounded childlike.
